I enjoyed Shadowland. I started Ghost Story, and it was about typical psychotic killer kidnaps child, etc. Nae my cuppa. I'm not a horror-type, but I dabble in most genres. Shadowland was awesome though. Like Harry Potter locked in a ghostly mansion hunted by a necrophiliac loony, sort of. Awesomeness.

And Hamlet:

'Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world. Now could I drink hot blood
And do such bitter business as the bitter day
Would quake to look on. Soft, now to my mother.—

Creepy, or what.

If you mean the guy and the apparently kidnapped young girl in the prologue, things are not what they seem. It's not a psychotic killer story, it's a supernatural horror story.

And I like your description of Shadowland.
