I prefer the single purpose device for reading. I did read a lot on my Fire HD6, but went back to e-ink. Lighter weight, longer battery life, and single purpose really suits my needs better. My eyes love my Kobo Glo HD, Aura HD, and Kindle Voyage. And it's nice knowing my latest addiction, Acey-Duecey, is not waiting to taunt me with unfair computer advantage in the back ground.

I have no problem reading on tablets, it doesn't bother my eyes at all. I used to love reading on my Nexus 7. However, since I read outside a lot in bright light, I was always having to switch between devices. So now I read only on my Kobo as it's just easier for me to use a single dedicated device for reading. I do use my iPad for PDFs though.

Isn't anyone bothered by the weight of the mini tablets? My fire seems double the weight of my kindle which is enough to bother me.
And I have trouble with the fire interface. I keep jumping to things I didn't mean to open and sometimes have trouble navigating back to where I wanted to be. My kindle keyboard is such a simple device. I've never had the thing navigate to someplace I hadn't deliberately chosen. Never have that trouble with a computer either. It goes only where I tell it. My Fire is gathering dust. I'll get another maybe when they come with mice and a decent Windows interface. My Fire now is an exercise in frustration. I can't stand even looking at the photos I've put in it. The interface going from one picture to another sucks. |

The weight bothers me too, so much so that I cannot read on a tablet at all. So e-ink is the only way for me. Phone screens are too small for comfortable reading.

I'm reading more on e-ink these days, and some print books. Much easier on my eyes. I like my tablets for reading with my ears--audiobooks and text-to-speech.

If I'm reading on the couch, or hammock, I generally hold the reader up, but those are almost never long reading sessions as I never can find a comfy reading position on the couch and I always fall asleep in the hammock ![]() |

To be honest, I thought the concept was a bit hokey, but I had some gift certificates at Thinkgeek, so I grabbed these : http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/iisj/ I find that they really help with my eyestrain, especially playing games with a ton of text. (I do have to put up with my coworkers calling me "Bono" though.) |

In Canada, given the lack of Overdrive support to Kindle I use my phone a lot and could see ditching the Kindle for an iPad. As much as I love e-Ink, convenience would win.

I went through a similar transition, although my dream device is a 6 inch waterproof phone with great stereo speakers that can go from colorscreen to e-ink with the press of a button.

I tried reading on my iPad. I found myself playing video games, reading the internet, and not reading. So I use my Kindle to read.

I think what has happened is that phones and tablets have vastly improved--better screens (bigger screens for phones), better-faster processors, more ram, newer operating systems with more features, and in many cases much lower prices than a few years ago.
E-ink on the other hand is stuck in three year old technology for the basic devices, and worse, have lost features in many instances like audio, 3G, physical page turn buttons, having lower battery life and lower storage on some base units. And the high end e-ink units cost as much as nice tablets. Also other hoped for e-ink technology improvements never arrived. Last edited by conan50; 10-16-2015 at 04:02 PM. Reason: spelling |
