Google Books is a project to digitise books. The out-of-copyright ones can be downloaded as page-scanned PDFs; the commercial ones obviously cannot.

This is entirely separate from Google Play Books, which is a commercial ePub bookstore.

That is a great search engine but when I clicked on a book, I got links to various places.
I knew to buy a book from Google, you do need a payment option.

Shari, we aren't talking about Google Play here, but about Google Books, which is a completely different service. Google Books is not a bookstore, and doesn't sell anything.

Even I was confused and I am certainly not new.

A google search was no help because when one types in Google books, it pops up both at the top. Though thanks for clarifying.

Ok...when I went to books.google.com and typed in "Treasure Island" I ended up on this page https://books.google.com/books?id=UP...island&f=false

I then decided to click on the "Ebook-Free" button to download the book, and it took me to google play to get the book. I had to use a google account to download the book. (although I didn't need a payment method attached to the account)

So yes...google books doesn't sell anything, and you can't download anything from there either--not even free books that are in the public domain.

I was replying to 2 separate things--Cinsajoy's statement that you had to have a card on file in order to get even free books from Google play, and your post saying that "out-of-copyright ones can be downloaded as page-scanned PDFs"

Neither are true, in my experience.
