OK, I refused to let this thing beat me. I realized I had some sticky velcro. What I did was stick a piece of one side of the velcro onto my Paperwhite where the magnet will shut it off, and then wrapped my magnet in the opposite sticky velcro. So now I have an easy to remove magnet via the velcro and I just remove the magnet at the end of the day to power down the Paperwhite, and put it back on to shut off the front light completely. It looks like it will work. I could not do anything but reset the Paperwhite with the power button with the magnet on, but with it off the Paperwhite appears to power down. With the magnet removed when I push in the button for two light flashes it gives me the option to shut off the screen and then I can. I just leave the velcro-magnet attached but slightly off to the side. Then I turn the Paperwhite back on and move the magnet back into place to shut off the light. Yay!

That pop up panel is new for the 5.6.x software. I really should have asked first before offering advice. I just didn't think of it. ![]() |

Surely if you don't want a light, it doesn't really make sense to buy a device that has one, does it?

The main reason people give for not wanting a frontlit reader is that the light diffuser somewhat lowers the screen contrast, by interposing an additional layer between the text and the reader. That's a valid argument, to be sure.
However, by buying a reader with a frontlight and then turning the light off, you're in the worst of both worlds - you still have the light diffuser reducing the contrast, but you no longer have the light to improve it again. It just seems crazy to me ![]() |

HarryT -- what if someone wants the Voyage's haptic feedback buttons on a touchscreen device, or the Kobo H2O's waterproofing?
Not a lot of alternatives... you will have to get a lighted model... |

A valid argument, certainly.
