With a "bash" script you can launch some Kobo command line tools, but they are not so much powerful. It depends by your goal
Thank you for the extra info.

That means that there is no easy way to create a simple program on a Kobo, other than simple shell scripts.

Oh, well...

Is that right?
I don't think you can conclude that because KoReader uses Lua, that the generic Lua interpreter is available to write your own scripts. Maybe yes, maybe no. I'm interested myself.

Many programs embed Lua, or customize it to their preference.

Yup, no lua interpreter shipped by Kobo (unlike on the Kindles >= 5.x), KOReader bundles its own LuaJIT.

But yeah, that shouldn't stop you, it's small & easy to build.

I can see now that for the languages with interpreters you have to include them also.

But what about compiled executables?
Can C and C++ be used without anything extra?
And if yes, what about other compiled executables, for example from Pascal?

Sorry for my ignorance.
Just trying to clear things a little.

All depends on what run time libraries are needed.

You could ask some suggestions to Koreader devs.
Remember that you already have binary packages for Python 2 and 3, so the trouble with it is diminished.
