Price is a function of component prices and sales volume.
Odds are a $50 color tablet will sell noticeably better than a $50 eink reader.

When I saw this thread I though I could use a couple of cheap android tabs to use as auxiliary control panels for my WINK/Alexa lighting control system to mount in areas that are out of range of Alexa. So I did a bit of Googling and Amazon searches and found a plethora of 6" to 10" tabs starting at around $40 US.

I find it hard to believe that Bezos would jump into a market that's already over saturated.

Perhaps "multiple revenue streams" would be a better way of putting it? Eink Kindle owners just buy books; tablet owners can buy books, music, apps, videos, etc.
