No ... plenty of coyotes. It's just that, with all my cats being indoors, I don't think of them as a problem. You can hear them howling at night, however. I happen to love the sound.

Well ... you know, and it really is true .... snakes just want to get the hell away from people. So, tossing a handfull of gravel in a snake's general direction has always gotten them going where I want them to go (which is away from me). Mountain lion attacks here are really rare (because there are so many deer ... and lions really prefer deer to people).

Most of the attacks I know about happened in California ... and fairly close to human habitation. True of both the lion and coyote attacks. The problem is that their preferred prey has been driven out of the area ... so people start looking pretty tasty. Here, there are still deer and other smaller prey all over the place.

The fire ants?? Well, I use a bait to keep them out of my yard. Once a year baiting usually does it. Yes, I know ... not a particularly Buddhist thing to do ... but once you've been chewed up by them, you get a whole lot less philosophical about them. I got swarmed one day so badly (standing over by the boat dock ... luckily) that the only thing I could do to save myself was to jump into the lake. I probably had 300-400 bites on me in the end ... but, I'm not allergic to fire ants, so ... whew!! Now, I know to look for their mounds and stay at least 10 feet away from any mound. Haven't been bitten since.

The cats are pretty good about killing the scorpions and many of the rattlesnakes that have actually gotten in to the house (through the drainage pipes that come out of the cat porch ... and then through the cat door). I still have to screen those pipes. It's on my todo list.

i maybe should mention, i find that particularly hilarious because my grandmother just told me the other day she has "a damned cricket" living on her balcony.

"a damned cricket ? why all the hate ?" i said. "crickets are good luck, according to the japanese." (chinese ? not sure now)
"the blasted thing makes such a racket all night long, i can't get any sleep !! and here's what i want to know, i live on the 6th floor, how in the blazes did he get up here in the first place ???"
then she told me she almost threw the plant where he was hiding over the edge, but she changed her mind because she didn't want to kill an innocent bystander by accident, and after that the sneaky bugger moved to a different pot plant. last i heard, the battle raged on. so far, it's cricket : 1, grandmother : 0. maybe i should buy her one of those bats.

Hmmm ... she's still got to corner the little bugger before she can smoosh him.

I really love the sound of the crickets out here. But note, I say "crickets" plural. While one cricket will keep you up all night, a whole chorus of them is really soothing.

Maybe, you should get her a hundred MORE crickets and then have them ALL sing to her!!!

Not so much in the way of dangerous wildlife up here in NH. We do have bears, so you have to be careful about bird feeders in the spring, and garbage. Moose can be a bit of a problem in the spring, not so much other times. The only poisonous snake is the water moccasin, and it's rare.

On the other hand, we have blizzards.

Tell her to make sure she has a good shot, becasue the little bastards charge when they're wounded.
