Maybe I should clarify, I am looking for the books of the last 6-7 years. Sanderson is good, but I wouldn't call Stormlight or Mistborn old-school fantasy. Also, I find his characterization of women really artificial.

What I am looking for is mostly something like a monomyth. Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn was a perfect example of it, maybe I should reread it now that a sequel is coming.
Have you read Elizabeth Moon's "Paksenarrion" series? It's one of my favourite fantasy series of recent years. The original trilogy is published by Baen as a reasonably priced omnibus edition called "The Deed of Paksenarrion".

Thanks for these recommendations. Is there any good place in particular to start with Eddings?

I'd suggest the "Belgariad" series.

Yes, first Belgariad & Malloreon (5 volumes each)
Belgarath & Polgara thereafter. (2 vol.)
Then Elenium & Tamuli (3 vol. each) a different bookverse
And for dessert the stand-alone Redemption of Althalus.

Just read the omnibus edition. Very good book. Baen will provide the first book of the triology from it's free library. Are any of the follow on books by Elizabeth Moon good?

The "backstory" is in the Baen "The Legacy of Gird" omnibus, which is two novels. The first I very much enjoyed; the second not so much. Then there's the 5-book "Paladin's Legacy" series (which is not published by Baen, but is available on Amazon, etc.) which is a kind of a sequel to "The Deed of Paksenarrion", which I thought was pretty good.

I'm a bit confused. I bought both the Kings of the North and Oath of Fealty via the WebSubscription package, so I assumed that Baen published that series. Neither book seems to be listed now.

As you rightly say, Baen originally published the first two books in the series, but then Ms Moon took the series to a different publisher.

Highly recommended. All of the above are on my usual yearly rereading list. The characters feel like old, old friends.

Also, if you haven't read them, I really enjoyed Christopher Paolini's "Inheritance Cycle". He wrote the first one "Eragon" at age 15, and his youth shows in some places, but the writing gets progressively stronger, as does the story and characters. Worth a read.

Guess I'm confused too. All of the Legacy of Paksenarrion/Paladin's Legacy books have been published by Del Rey beginning with the first book in the series in 2010, Baen didn't publish any of them (just the earlier two series or books). Unless Del Rey had a Webscription deal like Tor did briefly and sold through Webscription? (except the Tor books are still listed at Baen eBooks just not available to buy, I see nothing of any Del Rey books other than one Eric Flint book)

The Paks series' is...

Prequel books;
Surrender None (Baen)
Liar's Oath (Baen)
Omnibus version, The Legacy of Gird (Baen), A Legacy of Honour (Orbit UK)

Paksenarrion trilogy;
Sheepfarmer's Daughter (Baen)
Divided Allegiance (Baen)
Oath of Gold (Baen)
Omnibus version, The Deed of Paksenarrion (Bean)

Legacy of Paksenarrion/Paladin's Legacy;
Oath of Fealty (Del Rey)
Kings of the North (Del Rey)
Echoes of Betrayal (Del Rey)
Limits of Power (Del Rey)
Crown of Renewal (Del Rey)

Must be me that's mistaken in that case, Brian. Apologies for the confusion.

I have the first two books of the series, and I didn't buy it from Amazon. I thought that I got it via baen's websubscription. I'm pretty sure that by 2011, I wasn't buying books from Sony. But, I did pull up both books and both were published by Del Rey. I'm really not sure what the deal is.

Copyright makes fools of us all sometimes. But the books are all very good and the Amazon versions are well done.
