I think the doll stands in for the baby. Like I've seen a lot of suspense book covers with teddy bears standing in for the baby. The readers know the story is not about teddy bears.

I will be honest with you, I am on a tablet and I had to look close to see that was an upside-down doll. So I think it was your choice of doll more than it being a doll.
You know me well enough that you know I will always give you my honest opinion. I have faith you will find a good cover.
Idea: maybe have the older girl looking into a crib or bassinet.

How old is the babysitter? The previous picture of a girl seemed a lot younger than this last one.

I like the idea of the young girl's hand reaching out to the baby's hand, but the cover you had with that didn't look right. The baby's hand didn't look small enough and it just overall seemed off.

I think a teddy bear works in that situation, (or a rattle or baby blanket or crib) but a doll actually looks like an infant, so it introduces a note of confusion.

This cover's growing on me though. It just seems to fit the story well and the black and white is appealing to my 'don't follow the crowd' contrariness. (ie. the standard idea that the cover has to "pop" etc.)

Here's the little description of the book from my original post:

Baby is a novel of suspense. A 17-year-old high school girl from Phoenix, Arizona, gets a job as a babysitter for a rich and powerful man. The girl finds that the baby is being abused. The man says he's just practicing discipline, but the girl thinks something more sinister may be up. It is and against great odds she tries to save the baby.

I agree about the hand. If I go with that cover I will definitely make the baby's hand smaller and the adult's, for that matter.

RJB, help me out with what you're thinking. The description says a 17 year-old girl tries to save the baby. (this pertains to #2, the girl holding the raggedyann doll). And you say "it's not a baby." So you're thinking the cover doesn't fit because it should have the pic of a baby on it? It doesn't come through that the girl on the cover is the 17 year-old?

Thanks Brian. This issue with the age of the female on that cover has been kind of weird for me. Some people are upset that she's not a baby. You see her as 5-8. I would see her as older. (15-17).

Would your sense of her being 5-8 mess up your interest in the cover, or make you feel confused when you read the blurb and found out the girl was a 17-year-old?

Too me her looking to be 5-8 (or elementary school age) would make be think the child being abused in the story was in that age range (without reading the blurb) and that that is who is being represented on the cover (perhaps a child who's "nickname" is baby). It just wouldn't come into my thinking that she was supposed to represent the 17 year old babysitter since the stature of the girl and the way she's carrying the doll doesn't say "teenager" to my perception (but perceptions will vary).
