love it too, though I don't treat it to well. Just toss it in my back without any protection , use it in the bath, take it on vacations and bike trips, funtions fine. I only wish that pinch to zoom off would work again, have to get the fonts back to normal at least once a day.

I have it with me for almost 2 years. I must say I just love this reader and Geoff's patches mean that you can have the most personalised reading experience as possible.

Maybe you missed the announcement but reading progress for sideloaded kepubs was reinstated a while ago. It's certainly present in the current fw 3.17.3

Any idea what I can do to get it back to normal? Mind, it was not fast before, but it was not this slow.

Otherwise, love it.
Have you tried a basic reset (paperclip reset) on your Aura HD? The couple of times my Aura HD seemed to slow down when changing screen, this has worked to speed things back up again.

Here's a link to Kobo's instructions on a basic reset:

thanks, i did miss it.
But, because I never switch wifi on, don't really need any of the new settings and because it never had a problem, I'll just keep it as it is

I love mine, on my second as the first one died after 1 1/2 year (stopped responding, did not charge any more, got a new one under warranty) i just wish the firmware was less flaky, as i had some (bought) epubs that had huge fonts and the reader refused to change them, and a 3 book compendium that crashed after page 1200 (found the 3thd book elsewhere so i could finish the series ;-).
Also the light is to bright even on 1% in a real dark bedroom it could easy be 1/2 what it is now..

I've had my brown Aura HD for a little over a year, with around 500 hours of reading on it. It's definitely a good device. In the end I just found it a little too big for me, and the back of it always annoyed me. I'm using a Glo HD now, and kept the Aura HD as a backup.

Most decently made ereaders should last a lot longer than a year and a half.... I have an original Kindle DX here, as well as a DXG and they both work perfectly fine, even though they are past retirement.

Only one of my Aura HDs has lasted over a year. The other two I have used are dead (bad screens) and so is the one I gave out as a present.

I personally like the larger size, but I am using a Voyage now and it's way, way, way better made than the Kobo, IMO.

What is the difference between a basic reset and restarting the Aura HD? I understand the use of the pin hole as a forced restart (turning off and on again). Am I wrong?

The pinhole reset restarts the device without attempting to save any data. It should only be used if the device stops responding. It is the equivalent of hitting the reset button on a PC.

Powering off by holding the power button in the off position for three or four seconds will do a shutdown. It should save the current status properly to the database.

Powering off by holding the power button in the off position for about 10 seconds will force a power off. Like the pinhole reset, it won't save any data first.

davidfor--Is there any difference between powering off by holding the power button in the off position for 10+ seconds and doing a pinhole reset?

The Power button t OFF for 10+ seconds should have the same functionality as pinhole reset -- both do a basic reset.

But, if you press the Light button while you turn off the Kobo with the Power button and then continue holding the Light button, it will perform a factory reset, which will wipe out the device.

I bought mine in may, 2013, and I'm still very happy with it. Use it almost every day.

Somewhere along at 3.11 I stopped updating the firmware, since I prefer coolreader for reading anyway. It has all I need for reading. When it dies I will probably replace it with the H2O.

As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the pinhole reset will mean the device starts immediately. The important thing is that, like pushing the reset button on a PC or pulling the power cord out, neither method attempt to save anything when they are done.

I really don't like the term "basic reset". As a term, I would actually expect it to be the same as a factory reset.

Holding the light button down as you turn it off doesn't do anything. The factory reset is initiated because the light button is held down when you turn it on.
