For me, waiting is fine, because I already have the PRS-505 and love it to bits. When a new one comes out, I'll probably try to sell my current PRS-505 if the new one is worth it. But unless it has a screen slightly bigger, but not too big, than the current 6", or significantly better contrast, it's not going to be worth it for me right now. My Reader is amazing and I only wish I'd gotten it sooner.

A difficult choice.

It depends on whether you already have something to read on or not. If you do and you are keen on kindle, I would advise to wait for next generation.
However, if you don't have anything, then just as HarryT said, it is not worth to wait so long without a reading device, let alone we don't know there will be v2 coming autumn. It might be September 2008, it might be November 2008 or March 2009? You never know. And all the time you might enjoy a superb ebook reader and maybe you are going to like it so much that you will not want to upgrade when next generation comes out.

I didn't buy my Kindle till after a year. I used my Macbook to read my ebooks. I didn't miss what I never had though I wanted a Kindle the second it came out but thought the price was too high. I got my current one off ebay for $300 new plus S/H $20. I learned my lesson with my iPhone, got it on the first day, got my $100 rebate but if I waited 6 months I could have gotten it for $400. If I waited a year I could have a 3G for $200 but more expensive plan. The main thing to remember is that Technology moves very fast. Only if you can afford it and you need it should you buy it now.

I just voted that I'd wait, and as I was writing this reply I changed my mind. Here is what I would do. Buy the current Kindle with the realization that you will be upgrading in two/three/four years to something really cool. That's how I buy my laptops, cellphones, and tvs. If you wait for 2.0 and spend the extra cash then two years from now you will be looking at the A4 sized color Kindle and wanting that.

Or, you could always hold out for something like the Young Lady's Primer described in Neil Stephenson's book The Diamond Age.

Wait until November when last year's products will start to be discounted.

Sony put on some astounding deals in summer 2007. I suspect the month before releases of new products will be good time to buy.

It's interesting. Sony will probably have to discount the 505 because it's "last year's product" whereas today's firmware/.epub announcement means it's a whole new product. Time will probably tell how well these claims have been implemented. But it sounds good so far

I'm sure people will be dropping their Sony 500's because they can't be updated with the most current firmware. You may get one cheap in the next couple of weeks to hold yourself over. I just may pick up a Sony 505 now that it will be able to read PDFs. I still use my MacBook to read all my adobe ebooks and magazines, I love color but I can always use another reader because I'm a Tech Addict.

I guess what I'm saying is 'if you can afford it, and want it, buy it'.

I bought my Kindle about 3 months ago, (33 days before the price dropped). I wasn't bent out of shape about the price drop, because I decided that having the Kindle for that extra 33 days was worth the 40$ to me.

I am not normally prone to splash out large quantities of money on frivolities. But I'm glad I bought my Kindle when I did. If Kindle II is really so much greater than Kindle I (and I admit the thought of an 8 1/2 by 11 screen makes me salivate--but only if it can display / annotate / search PDFs) I'll save up until I can afford to make the switch. But it doesn't make Kindle I any less useful to me right now.

YMMV

Buying on a budget

I have to wait because it's just not in the budget right now due to a business slowdown, but I'm trying to tell myself this is a good thing because it will let me see any new machines that might be out by December, and any upgrades that might come along between now and then. I like the Kindle for its ease of use features, but I like the Sony & the Cybook for the look, the small form factor, and features they offer that the Kindle does not. If the Kindle gets smaller that would be something I'd put in the plus column for that machine. I think the Sony added a big plus with the recent upgrade. It will be fun, I think, to see what the state of the field looks like at the end of the year when at least one or two of the Astek machines will join the pack. In the interim I'm still reading paperbacks. I may get to read on an iPhone hand-me-down if a certain relative gets the new one, but that's not a cetainty. I'd prefer to wait rather than get some older & likely heavier device. Reading the forums here helps me pass the time and keeps me informed. Thank you all for that.

And, I might end up having 3 or 4. Really, if they were to come up with something that had an 8.5 x 11 inch screen or something and read PDFs, I would consider buying it, but for work only. For recreational reading and for carrying around my books on a daily basis ... my existing Kindle is just plain perfect.
