I don't know for sure, but I suspect that it wouldn't. But why would a Kindle not be registered?

Privacy reasons aside, if one were trying to avoid forced updates but still wanted access to WiFi, one might keep one's Kindle unregistered if what you suspect is true.

I am also simply curious whether updates are pushed by Amazon or pulled by Kindle devices: Does Amazon push updates to registered devices, the same way they send ebooks to devices? Or does the Kindle check for updates whenever it connects to WiFi, then pulls it down when an update is found?

Amazon needs to push it, otherwise all Kindles would pull it at once, and we know they are staggered.

I *think* I have heard anecdotes where unregistered devices were updated, though I cannot be sure.

It is possible Amazon pushes updates to the account...
...but I would think it more likely it is pushed to the device PID (serial number).
