I'm going to have to find elsewhere. Since I don't want to update the desktop reader, it locked up my computer. Had to get rid of it via task manager. I have my books - all of 5 of them downloaded and I'll buy elsewhere. The e-reader is good, the service isn't.

I don't update on any app's say so. It has to tell what it is updating or improving before I hit download. Purchased security is allowed.

Just because you buy from Kobo does not mean you have to use Kobo Desktop or WiFi (with the associated risk of a f/w upgrade).

The majority of Kobo books also have an ePub formatted version available; for those you download the ACSM and allow ADE to then download the actual ePub.

I never convert Amazon books using Calibre, as my experience with this has been very bad (no table of content in the converted ePub). Maybe it has gotten better since then, but I would suggest trying it on a free book first.

I am in France and buy most of my English language books from Kobo. I should probably try Google Play books too, but their search engines seems very bad. The one at Kobo is far from great but at least you can filter books on their language. I'm not very interested in books in languages I can't read and would rather not see them in the result.

For French books I mostly use 7switch, but although they do have English language books, I never find the ones I want.

Were you converting Mobi or AZW3? AZW3 books should convert very well indeed to ePub.

Google's UI isn't that good, terrible actually. But they offer cheapest prices for Adobe ePubs. Kobo is cheaper with a coupon, but without one Google usually matches Amazon's price.

That said, I buy many self-published books from Amazon as they are not sold anywhere else; but otherwise I go to the Google. That has nothing to do with company loyalty, Google is the only ebook store that pays taxes at where I am. When I buy from Amazon, I sometimes pay taxes to the USA, that is nonsensical as far as I am concerned.

As far as I can tell (I tested it on one book), Google uses Adobe DRM and Alf works fine.

The epubs when downloaded from the computer are just ADE. I don't know what they are when downloaded on a device.

I don't know but I suppose it was Mobi, since I didn't like the result at all.

To download books from Google you need the latest 2.01 from ADE. I got an error from a slightly older 2.01 version. But yes, Alf then works fine.
