Even tho dead-end, I still like it.
Sounds like it's still a useful device so why not use calibre to convert your books to Word format, or HTML or possibly even PDF in this case?

The OP is a bit confused about the fundamental purpose of Calibre. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but Calibre offers NO readers for portable devices. It is primarily an ebook catalog tool which also means that it "just" reads a database. (I use the word "just" with tongue firmly in cheek, because there are far more uses for it than cataloging ebooks, but none include a reader for *any* portable device.) To support this primary function, there are many subsidiary functions, such as conversion from one ebook format to another, creating new ebooks, or editing/polishing older ebooks.

Large portable (remember when Portable was anything with a Handle ) can run Calibre (and the viewer) if they run any of the supported OS.

Microsoft will be doing one more update to the Windows RT, I believe this September. Then after that it may get security patches and that will be about all. Microsoft is dropping the Windows RT that is for sure. There will not be a Windows 10 RT.

The updates you mention are some Windows 10 features that are backported onto Windows 8.x RT. That will indeed be the final update (except for security updates) of Windows RT. Which features they are going to backport, I don't know.

The problem is there is no Python 2.x for Windows 8.1 RT. No Python, no Calibre.

Don't knock MSReader. It had its uses, including being easy to deDRM and convert.

That was worth a lot in the pre-Kindle era, and I for one bought MSReader format as late as 2010.

Also, LIT format was the precursor to ePub.

The OP is not confused at all.

calibre includes a reader (has for as long as I can remember) and that reader works on any platform which calibre's library manager works on.

Any portable device that runs Windows i686/x64-compatible apps (Surface non-RT or any laptop), or OSX (laptops still count), or anything at all if it runs linux has calibre and its viewer.

And I am sure someone, somewhere, is running ArchLinux or Gentoo in a chroot on their Android phone, AND has installed calibre therein and is making use of it to read books.
On a more serious note, a Ubuntu phone/tablet (anyone know someone who actually uses one of these bugbears???) would have calibre in the appstore. There have been other linux tablets, but even less famous.

Mine too! Any way of getting calibre to convert them before they fail completely? (The Add Book option doesn't seem to have the necessary input.)

Is there any practical solution for getting old, out of print books made into an eBook?

The Workshop forum has some tips.
They all involve OCR and all those OCR added issues..

But
You do not need to use Alf's tools

The other issues:
Tedious (page flips, scan...)
The needed 'good quality' equipment is not real cheap nor Off the shelf.

Ion (Audio) had a (No cut) Book Scanner that looked promising, but it was pulled before it hit the US market (Lawyer problems? )

MS dropped LIT because it became a dead format because Adobe had RMDSK/ADE on more computers/devices. It was a lost cause to keep LIT going. Especially since ePub is basically a newer version of LIT.
