I'm a just converted palm-diehard as well. When the T5 didn't have WiFi, metal case, or cradle...I was a bit disheartened. At the same time, my work offered me a hx4700. So, I soul searched and decided to give up my T3 and give it a go. Its an incredible device and until palm steps up, I'll keep using it.

The hx4700 is like the holy grail of PDAs right now, that is what I've heard in several places. Unfortunately, it is at least $150 more expensive than the Dell I just ordered, which is more than I could have affordwed.

Found an interesting site via a link on jkontherun...
http://www.vgapocketpc.com/ Might be interesting for those lucky enough to have a vga pda! Mostly reviews, but it also mentions that Bejeweled has gone VGA. |

Alex,
I found the following link at PalmAddicts: http://www.palmfocus.com/ppc01.asp Some previous Palm hardliner talks about his first Axim x50v experiences... seems like you will have a great time ahead, too. I don't expect anything but a detailed report from you! ![]() |

That is nice, someone did all the work for me. I basically just have to follow his blog in chronological order and to learn all I need to know about my future PPC

Hey guys! Been a long time, but I'm hoping to be able to return to productive posting... It looks like I'm switching over again. After my first round of trying with the x30 mid I wound up selling it to a friend. He hasn't used it and I may wind up buying it back from him! Ridiculousness indeed. In the meantime he's been letting me borrow it to play with it more. Alex I'm jealous of your x50v, mostly. I think that I'll stay QVGA until they can seriously improve battery life.
I'm really disheartened by Palm's terrible road. One would almost think that they're deliberately driving themselves into the ground. I'm not ready to totally do away with my T|E, but all the bad news about Palm (and Sunrise not coming out for it!) really dampen my previous enthusiasm. Glad to see you all still here and kicking it out. I'm still insane at work and home, but I hope I can get caught up after my sabatical. Good luck Alex! |

Ignatz,
If you do go PPC again, I think you'll be okay. It takes a lot of hunting, but pretty much everything you need software-wise from Palm is around in the PPC world. The usage paradigm may be different though. For example, I depended heavily on a week view from Datebook5. It was the only way for me to get some apptmt detail and a little bit of overview of multiple days at the same time. Well, Pocket Informant arranges the days funny. Not down the first column and then down the second column like a normal week calenday, but back and forth with Mon/Tues in first row. Then Wed/Thrs, etc. I kept getting the days confused and was almost completely fed up with the date book on PPC. But then I found that I could work off one of the monthly calendar views. You can see the times of a couple of apptmts so you see what days are free. And you can tap on the day and see not only the apptmts for the day listed, but the whole month is still visible. Another tap and the month calendar fills the screen again. It's working great. I know that's a long example, but the idea is that you may get frustrated because you can't do things in the ways you have perfected on Palm. But if you're willing to be a little flexible and play with hundreds of programs and configuration of options, you'll probably be pretty happy with things eventually. I'm especially picky and depend on a lot of functions for daily use, so I've spent a lot of time trying to find new ways of doing things. Not done yet, but it gets better every week. Sometimes, you just have to count some things as lost, but it turns out you can make do okay anyway. I'm a little jealous of those that started from scratch with PPC... I think it's a lot easier that way! But with persistence the Pocket PC world can start looking really nice. |

When I dropped out of PPC, it mainly had to do with the resolution being worse than my T|E despite the larger screen area, and a general frustration with the Windows Mobile OS, which is a mess compared to the smooth Palm OS. I always admired the Dell device though. It's lighter than the T|E and very pretty, I think. I've been getting frustrated too, with the T|E's slow speed. I can adapt to any OS without a problem. And I never used the default Palm application screens anyway, opting for ZLauncher. Anyway, I still don't really have the cash, but I think I can pay it off in installments.

Dell are selling the x50 here in Oz for $699 AUS, not bad considering I paid $499 for the ipaq h1930 late last year. Now if only I had $699..... <sigh>

To quote from your post,
"If you do go PPC again, I think you'll be okay. It takes a lot of hunting, but pretty much everything you need software-wise from Palm is around in the PPC world. The usage paradigm may be different though." This was my biggest concern as I also don't like the "Road PalmOne are on." As my "handle" suggests I am a huge Tealpoint fan - so they're out if I switch to PPC. I'm thinking of a "spare T3" in the form of a Tapwave Zodiac2, since all my apps will run on it. However, when OS6 hits (if and when) and things really start getting "buttoned down" in terms of non-operation (especially the older dinosaur apps I use daily) . . . I'm afraid it's a Dell Axim X50 for me, also. It just seems like a terrific machine and you've allayed some fears regarding software availability. I've heard that Docs2Go type spreadsheet "quickness" just doesn't happen on PPC for some reason -- also I'm a "quick app launch freak" and would want something akin to TealLaunch for PPC. If I can get those two things together I'm sure I could make the leap also - but it'll be very sad leaving "Palm" as I remember it. Good choice though - heck of a unit. Have you found alternate launchers that are "fast," and do you use Excel stuff? I'd be curious how that works out for you. |

I am using Magic Button V1.7 on my Axim. It is free and fast and only consumes low memory. I am going to write a lot more about my PPC experience in a few days, when I have more time.

PalmTealLover,
There are a number of launchers. I like ProgramMenu Plus together with the Pocket Plus today addin launcher. (It has tabs so it doesn't take up much space.) Here's a small list of ones I found interesting, but I haven't tried them all... -- Spb Pocket Plus tabbed today launcher and more -- ProgramMenuPlus -- SmallMenu Plus -- MortButtons http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=812 -- tdLaunch -- cLaunch today plugin Like tabbed pocket plus launcher but free http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=808 -- PLaunch for palm-like launcher Categories on the right -- iLaunch $5 -- DoubleLauncher 2.0 4 actions per button |
