Is it correct that the Voyage has an adaptive light but the Paperwhite 3 does not? Can the adaptive thingy (I'm assuming this is an auto brightness changing function) be turned off? So that you can fully control the level of brightness manually? |

Hi emmabee, I don't have either yet, but I have a Voyage on the way and so had been recently looking over the differences with both. Your nan sounds great and I think she'd like either one.
My guess is that there's only one thing that she'd notice about the lighting between the two - with the Paperwhite you have to manually change the lighting while the Voyage can adjust automatically based on lighting conditions. If you have the money, I'd say just get the Voyage so you can tell her you got her the top of the line. Even if she says she doesn't care, based on your comment about the first one you got her she sounds like she still might get a kick out of that. Also, it's probably almost imperceptible but the Voyage is slightly lighter weight (by about an ounce) and so possibly slightly easier to hold for a long time, and there's page turn buttons. If you think she won't care about any of that then she'd be just as happy with a Paperwhite for less money. If you're getting a Paperwhite, they've just released a new version. If you're getting a Voyage, a new one is (possibly) expected around November. ETA - There are probably youtube videos of side-by-side comparisons of the lighting on both that also might help you decide. On your last post, yes, with the Voyage you can also manually adjust the lighting. Last edited by sun surfer; 08-02-2015 at 02:44 PM. |

I am 74-years old and never adjust the lighting. I set it on bright when I get the device and that's it.

I would get Nan a Voyage. The light adjusts itself, and I like the feel of the screen better. I use the Voyage at home for reading in bed. The PW3 is my travel ereader.
Regarding the cost, I would get my grandmother a Voyage, if she were still alive. She was worth it... ![]() |

Harry, you can totally control the brightness on the Paperwhite 3 yes? We want to avoid it automatically adjusting itself. Unless that feature is able to be disabled.

Sure. It has 24 brightness levels. Only the Voyage has the automatic light sensor, not the PW. It can of course be disabled on the Voyage.

OK, just she said her friend at lunch club has one & it changes the light & she doesn't like that. She told me you can't turn it off & it's too bright. Her friend must have got it wrong. The Voyage looks more fragile than the Paperwhite with the screen not lower than the bezel (if you know what I mean). What do you think, agree/disagree?

The Voyage is a lot tougher than the PW. It has a rigid metal case and a toughened glass screen, compared to the plastic body of the PW.

Now I'm not sure again. At this point I may have to toss a coin or alternatively consult a medium. ![]() |

I'm sure you'd be happy with either. Both are very good readers.

I have the Voyage in a Swees case (9.99 on Amazon or 5.98/3.26 on eBay from UK or China seller, I've had all three and they are the same regardless of where you buy it from ![]() For me the advantage of the Voyage is the sharper contrast, the hepactic side pressure sensors and the auto brightness which is subtlety done so tbh I never realise the light has changed. It all depends on if your nan would like those features. You could order the Voyage then if she doesn't like it you can return it and get a PW3. Just be aware if you decide to let her try it out before you get a case (book style) she might find it a bit too thin to hold comfortably. |

Sure you can. You can return it for any reason. You may have to pay the return postage, but that's no big deal. I bought a Kindle Fire and returned it simply because I didn't like it.
