It's not the SIM card that blocks or allows access; it's Amazon's firewall. Yes, modern 3G Kindles are limited to a few sites such as Amazon, Wikipedia, and whatever the translation service is that Amazon use.

Personally I find accessing the Internet on my phone to be enormously easier than using the Kindle for it.

For me the fact that I have a smartphone and I can connect my kindle to the internet from my smartphone I have never seen the need for 3g on the kindle or even my Nexus 7 tablet.

I not made the switch...thinking about it Some one posted in another thread You cant turn the light off on the PW3 & they only get about 10 hours reading in before the battery dies. So as a 18 hour a day reader & my K3 only needing charged about 2-3 times a week.... that put me off. True when reading I need to use the M-Edge lights but when there battery dies takes 1 min. Not Hours. My K3 takes 2 hours to recharges Not 4 hours like I heard. IF this is true then I not sure changing going to work for me.

OP IF you do a lot or reading think about what I posted. Then make up your mind

The PW has a reading life of way more than 10h. I don't know where you read that, but it's not true.

I read on the average of 5.5 hours a day. My PW2 battery only needs charging ever other week. Now I only have the Wifi on at most once a day for maybe 2 minutes.

My Wifi/3G is almost never on. I read on my K3 adv of 18 hours a day. I have to recharge it about ever 2-3 days. It takes about 2 hours. Based on that I not sure the PW3 would work for me. So I have not purchased one ... I LOVE to have one

Seriously 18hrs a day? So that leaves four hours for sleep. An hour for washing & loo breaks. One hour for cleaning, shopping, paying bills & typing on mobileread. That's impressive!

I don't have a cellphone. That is precisely why I find Kindle 3G useful when I'm in the country. If Amazon blocks full internet on my old Kindles, I'd have to spend $50 an month on a cellphone, which I don't otherwise need.

You wouldn't have to spend $50/month, of course. You may choose to do so, but that's a different matter. You could pick up an older model Smartphone for next to nothing, and get a pay-as-you-go SIM, so you'd only pay for what you used, rather than a regular amount.

Hope your K3 keeps working for a while, though, to avoid the necessity of doing so.

But, it must be info on the SIM card that limits access, no? When I use my Kindle 3G I'm on Bell/Telus. I don't access via Amazon. The SIM card is identifying me on the Bell network.

I can't think of any reason off the top of my head why Amazon would not limit access on the older device if it can easily be done. I can't imagine Amazon's firewall rules identifying older Kindles connecting and treating them differently to newer Kindle's. One would presume the use of a different network, different sim or some other hardware restriction.

But all the traffic is going through Amazon's firewall.

For me, between a Kindle Keyboard and a tablet, I'd take the Keyboard. Between the Kindle Keyboard and a Paperwhite, boom, I'm outta there.
I have K3, its still one of my favorite Kindles ever made. I have 1st Gen PW and 3rd Gen Kindle Fire HD tablet. For me, I use Kindle Fire the most, but not for actually me doing the reading. I love the text to speech function on it. If I'm out and driving, I can still listen to my book if its not on audible. The voice is a gigantic improvement over the text to speech function on Kindle 3. Much more human sounding and not nearly as robotic.

Second feature I use is Audible. This is why I bought it. I never cared for the tablet apps for audible. Having it built into the tablet was a nicer user experience. I don't use Fire for movies, mail, surfing. Its just a nicer experience looking through audible and the ebook store on it.

That said, PW is worth getting. I'm waiting for next Gen Voyager to upgrade my 1st Gen PW. The Front lit is very nice on it. No more messing around with book lights if you want to read in the dark.

You are correct! Unless you Pay for the internet on the cell phone then its Only going to work thru WiFi! I have the Amazon Phone Pay as I go thru T-Mobile it Only get on the Web thru my internet at home. I Don't pay monthly for the Internet service! I pay for the Phone service of 10 cents a min. So having 3g on my k3 is nice when I go to the Drs office thinking I have enough ebook left to read only to find out Drs taking longer! I can then turn the 3g on & download my next ebook from the cloud
