Yeah, I was wondering if killing cc.db in the downgrader wasn't a neat way to alleviate this issue...

Isn't that only relevant to specific downgrades, though? Unless you are switching from a Cloud Collections cc.db to a non-Cloud Collections firmware they should be compatible.

Don't kill it unnecessarily for other people.

Unfortunately, it's hard to tell, for instance, there was some funky new stuff added in FW 5.6.x, the switch to CC isn't the only variable here :/. (FWIW, even the other way around isn't fool-proof, I'm fairly sure the issues I'm seeing on my PW1 updated from 5.x to 5.6 would be fixed w/ a factory reset or a targeted cleanup of some stuff in varlocal).

That, and the lack of a good way to tell if clearing the db is actually required or not depending on what the user is doing boils down to basically always doing it to be 'safe'.

I'd just go with backup & restore manually if you know you're doing a 'safe' downgrade, or reimport via LS.

Hi friends, a few days ago, I bought my first kindle, it is paperwhite 1st generation, second hand, after that i put on wifi,and the kindel updated itself, to 5.6.1.1. I think that the kindle is never jailbreak before, so i want to ask you, is there any way to jailbrake the kindle now? I have tried to downgrade my kidndle to previews version, just as like as instructions said, but i don't have folder named MRPackages folder, so I didn't do anything at all.

An interesting question.

The MRPackages folder is part of the MrPI (Mobleread Package Installer) ;
Which is an extension to the KUAL menu.

Ah, but KUAL and MrPI are not **signed** update packages, just a document and some document data (from the Kindle's viewpoint).
So they can be "installed" without a jailbreak.

They will not run in the normal manner without a jailbreak, but this isn't a "normal manner" -
we don't know if it will work until you try it for us.

Get both KUAL and MrPI from the snapshots thread, un-archive into kindle:/documents
according to the directions for each. (The last link in each snapshot item is a link to the item's thread.)

Then try this method again.

Do not be surprised if it doesn't work, but be sure to let us know what happens.

Downgrade to what?

You should never try to downgrade to a firmware earlier than what the device originally shipped with!

The vendor would not have spent $$$$$$ on a new firmware if they could have shipped the new device with an old firmware.

hey Guys.

If you need to downgrade your Kindle Paperwhite I from software 5.6.1.1. to 5.3.5 or 5.4.4 you don't need any jailbreak. Just copy older software to your Kindle PW I and do not! unplug Kindle from your computer. Than push the start button for 30 seconds and Kindle will reset and start with update pending. This was my rescue, after 5.6.1.1. removed page information from the down left corner. After the update is completed, you have older soft and everything is ok again.

I.e. to version 5.4.2 or so.

Nope, this was a specific snafu (... or simply that that part of the code branched off before the 'fix') on Amazon's part on the PW1 for FW 5.6.1.1.
