I picked up an old used copy of "The Adventure of Space Travel" by G.V.E. Thompson (1953) a few years ago, and enjoyed reading it. It is an introduction to space travel aimed at the young reader, so no fancy math. It doesn't seem to be published anymore and is getting hard to find (i.e. expensive), but if you see a copy somewhere (library, used book store), it may be worth grabbing it.
