Wait, I get it. The newer version seems more slabby on the serifs. It's not as refined as the print version. I'm not sure I like that, but I've never noticed that on my e-reader so I can't say it bothers me as much.

I don't this there are differences in the font files themselves. Kobo won't be able to change any typeface apart from their own Kobo Nickel anyway.
What is happening here is quite easy to see actually, 3.15 reads hinting instructions from the font files. But there is no way to reliably introduce hinting in eInks yet. eInk capsules aren't compatible with the hinting techniques we have now. If you want to fix this, sideload unhinted font files. |
