My Windows 7 computer has never recognized my Fire HD, so long ago I got a 99 cent app for the tablet. One uses the web browser to find the tablet, then goes to the /BOOK folder, then uses the tablet to find the right folder in the computer, then downloads it. It wasn't a BAD system, hardly more laborious than rooting around and finding a USB cord, but Send to Kindle is much, much better.
to get it recognised in windows.... connect fire tablet while tablet is OFF, then turn it on. windows should then do its new hardware detected thing, and after that it is oK.
It is worth while to get that sorted in case you want to sideload larger music or video files that cannot be emailed

let calibre manage the USB transfer - it knows where to put stuff, takes care of cover art....

the "right click" thing you are doing - what is sending the email and to where - calibre ? your email client ?.
the one advantage of mail it to amazon it that a copy also goes into your cloud. the downside is that you can't email azw ( I think) and you must set mobi to "old " or to "both" in the relevant preferences page of calibre, for mail via amazon to work.

The Send to Kindle program (or browser addon) is essentially the same thing as emailing documents to your kindle's email address. It still goes to Amazon's servers to be pushed to the device in question. It certainly doesn't go directly to your device through local wifi as suggested earlier. It just doesn't rely on email to GET to Amazon's servers in the first place. So far as I know, the same no AZW3/KF8 rules apply to Send to Kindle--just like the email/conversion service.

No, this is backwards. If you declare a font or font-family, you limit the font choices on a device. Caecilia is the sole font choice on KF7 devices like the K2 and DX.

I don't remember what you need to put fo the body because I just cut and paste it from a text file I have for that purpose. I found out about thi on Mobile read though, so it should be discoverable somehow.
That's for the PPW. It's a bug. If you put a font of any kind, for any reason, in the book--say, for a dingbat--then the whole body font displays as Helvetica, and you can't opt for something else. As I said, this is a bug, and not normal MOBI behavior.

See above. If you declare serif or sans, that's what your options will be limited to on the devices. (And it doesn't always work; I've seen these calls in a CSS sheet literally removed from the CSS at the KDP. Yup, it really happens.)

I always remove all font family stuff, from my ready- to-read copy of epub, as otherwise the kobo reader selection controls do not work.

I then sometimes calibre-convert that ready-to-read version to azw & put in onto my kindle fire or voyage - I have never noticed any inability to then change font - though as I like caecilia it's not something I have tested explicitly...

...so , opening my Kindle voyage & going to first side loaded book ( which came via epub with all font declarations removed.. ) yes I can select any of the available fonts.

NB I use azw3 , not mobi, dunno if that is a factor.

I reckon that if I turn on my fire tablet and add a book or two, I will get same results there.
Well, I don't sideload AZW3's, as they're not usable for my purposes. The prior poster is just a bit confused about the PPW display bug, that's all.

FWIW.

I am with Kubuntu 14.04 LTS.
Can I use the Amazone tools? If yes, does someone have a link, please?

Only Kindlegen is available for Linux.

Shameless plug:

You could use my simple Kindlegen plugin to generate Kindle books with Sigil.

I tried all the fixes when I got the Win 7 box, but the Fire HD remained invisible to it. (Worked fine with Win XP and also with my Win 7 laptop. The same, oddly, was true of DOS WordStar. I finally had to install vDos to get it running on the desktop.)

I think at Hitch's suggestion, I bought a 99-cent app that enabled me to find the tablet on my web browser, and from there on I could fetch the file from the computer. Actually easier than plugging in the USB cord.

But now I generally use Send to Kindle app, which is easier yet. I've never had a file larger than say 4 MB, but I assume they'd go wirelessly using the other system.

yes, you only need usb for big files - like a 1 Gb video. both send to kindle and Calibre companion are fine for books, though send to Kindle has some limitations.

you can also add misc unconverted docs e.g. word docs, PDFs to your documents folder at amazon cloud , if you keep a copy of your cloud drive on your PC, & they will appear on device.

I actually use dropbox for misc stuff, that also works well. Get the dropbox app onto fire tablet going to dropbox.com with silk browser and downloading the app. it is still not in amazon appstore
