iPhone Audiobooks on ios 8.4?

I'm not crazy about iBooks for audiobooks, as there isn't enough choice in playback speed. I read about a free app called Smarter Player in this forum and have been using it for months. It has almost infinite playback speed options plus a sleep timer and always remembers my playback position. I use it for MP3's that I've edited in iTunes to show media kind = audiobook. It still works on IOS 8.4 as long as I synch each audiobook as a playlist in iTunes. A bonus is it shows the chapter names!

After much looking around to find a solution all the while trying to rebuild a good listening experience with iBooks, I tried an app called "Undulib".

I recall it being posted about here fleetingly but that post seems to have vanished.

Regardless, the Comments were very positive in a thread regarding audiobook playback issues on the Apple iPhone forum so I thought I would give it a go. Anything was better than my experiences with iBooks.

It works very well, so well my four month old Honda CRV has no troubles displaying track information on the centre display now. iOS version 8.4 killed that ability off when Apple took audiobooks out of the music app.

It is designed for both audiobooks and audio drama.

Another one to recommend.

Hum, $3. Does it allow you to generate playlist and will it automatically go from on audiobook to the next in the list? I don't mind paying $3 if it will solve my problem, but I do want to make sure it will solve my problem first. Also, does it handle audible books, or do you have to convert to mp3?

iBooks actually does have some nice features. For example, you can manually arrange books if you like. I haven't seen that in any of the other programs. I like it better than the audible app.

I agree; the manual arrangement of bookshelves in iBooks is very nice, and I too haven't seen that feature in any other program.

Yeah, I'm using the iBooks app for audiobooks, nothing wrong with it for just listening to stuff straight through and just using the sleep timer.

Using iBooks means buying from Apple and that is a NO-NO. Never ever buy any books from Apple.

No it doesn't. You can sideload books to iBooks just as you can to most other reading apps.

I've bought a total of one book from Apple just to see what it was like. No problems at all using iBook to read the ebooks that I bought from Baen, or from Sony and Amazon after converting to epub. No problems at all listening to audio books that I bought from Audible, I don't even have to remove the DRM.

I do not have play lists so I cannot answer that.

I went ahead and bought it. It doesn't do playlist so it's not really a solution for my car issue. It does handle multipart books much better than audible does. Maybe Apple will fix some of the issues in 9.0.

The main benefit of using iBooks for Audible audiobooks (vs just using their app) is that you can setup a series of smart playlists with various different criteria, and only have those sync to your device.
