in another thread, I read that the AZW6 approach splits the book into text and images, with the images stored in a separate subfolder. which is why calibre does not yet? support import of that format.

I wonder why Amazon did this, I doubt their primary motive was to mess with 3rd party tools, but I can't think of a sensible reason to depart so much from epub method, unless it is to simplify serving different resolution images to different devices ?

I also wonder if this is to be the new norm for all new amazon books and , if so, where support for this is ranked on calibre's to-do lists?

Google search is little help, all it finds are links back to mobileread discussions. It seems to be another "stealth" rollout by Amazon

The only plugins I've got installed are DeDRM to do its unmentionable thing and Hyphenate This. One DeDRM would have been active on the book by this point.

Here are a few screenshots of what the freshly added book looks like:

The question mark here is supposed to be a sort of Penguin Random House logo:

The one here is supposed to be a map:

The one here is supposed to be some kind of squiggly icon at the top of the page:

And, if I understand what you want, this is what shows up when I select one of the "images" in the Viewer and tell it to Inspect:

Code:
<img class="w100" alt="" src="../images/00007.unknown" calibre_f3fa75ca98eb4413a4ee413f20f60226="0" style="-webkit-column-break-inside: avoid;">
I assume since the word "unknown" is in there, something is not coming across when the book is imported.
While in the editor is there a reason not to look in the images folder and check the image type then making sure the img link info is correct? (change unknown to the images actual extension)

It may be worth a try.
