Compare that to Apple, who have an "all eBook sales are final" policy. No refunds, no matter how bad the quality of the book is.
I was making a general statement about stores that do not stand behind their merchandise.

It seems to be the same thing. Amazon is standing behind what it sells and is willing to make it good if the customer is dissatisfied.
Apple sees themselves like doctors see themselves.................GOD.

Delphi Classics ARE wonderful.

Based on the experience with the Chambers collection from that other 'publisher', I went ahead just now and purchased the complete weird tales of Chambers, from Delphi. (Don' confuse this one with another, actually complete, collection also put out by Delphi Classics.)

Unfortunately, the very first novel has some issues with quotes on the LEFT side only. The right side quotes are fine.

Quickly checking, the rest of the ebook looks fine.

I'm running this through calibre right now in order to generate an epub so that I can try to fix it. Calibre has been working this title for 93 minutes...still not finished. (I may need some helpful advice on this, please.)

You can observe this problem by looking at the sample online.

If you wanted an epub, why didn't you buy the book in that format?

Also, 90+ minutes to convert a Delphi classic can be normal, if your computer is slow (to current standards) and the book is large.

I like the Delphi classics line a lot too... Just avoid the Alexandre Dumas one , it uses VERY heavily abridged versions of a few books.

Which in the UK and the EU would be in violation of the Distance Selling Directive. (which mandates refund within 14 days).

I believe that digital downloads are exempt from it. Most companies don't allow refunds on downloads.

I can imagine why. Most goods can't be copied like ebooks can. How do they know you haven't made a copy before trying to return the original book?

Yep, just about any reputable store. Both REI and WholeFood stake their reputation on the quality of what they sell. If a store gets a reputation of selling poor quality goods, then that's a store that's on it's way out of business.

Not really, Valve allows you refunds, if you live in the EU.

That's Valve's decision, they don't have to.

And I believe, too, that Valve's products do run-time licensing checks, which makes them different to downloaded books or music.

Only if they are build that way. There are a lot that runs fine without steam active (drm-free), and some become drm-free if you. Apply the latest patch (like world of goo)

True

http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-righ...ts-regulations

So you have to fall back on your general rights if the download doesn't complete

==
If you receive faulty goods and wish to return them, The Consumer Contracts Regulations are in addition to your other legal rights.

So, if your goods are faulty and don’t do what they're supposed to, or don’t match the description given, you have the same consumer rights under the Sale of Goods Act as you have when buying in store.

If your download doesn't complete, then absolutely, you're entitled to either a correct download or a refund. It's debatable, though, whether a poorly-formatted ebook (which is what we're talking about here) is "faulty" under the Sale of Goods Act. It's a lot better to buy from a retailer who offers either a sample (so you can see what it is you're buying) or has a decent refund policy.

Most of the time I don't have a problem with books I buy from Amazon. I have to wonder if I would have noticed much wrong with the sample if I had downloaded it though. Sample TOC's always have the links stopping at the end of the sample.
