Here's a link to a list of books in order and in chronological order (PDF).
Sorry, not applicable as the Pern series is SCIENCE FICTION and not fantasy.

The problem with the Taltos series is that not all of the books are available as eBooks. Most of the early books are not and because of that I would not read it. I don't read series that are incomplete as eBooks.

Best fantasy book I've read with dragons is in my own personal opinion are "The Rain Wild Chronicles" but it's hard to recommend that without first reading "The Liveship Traders" and it doesn't deal with Dragons quite so much although Sea Serpents do feature.

Two more series for consideration.

Firstly Gordon R Dickson's The Dragon and the George series (9 books). The main character in the series is a human transformed into a dragon and transported to a magical land and his adventures there. I read these years ago, but from what I can remember they are not too long.

Secondly, Katharine Kerr's Deverry novels. The main story line deals with events in the present, but there are flashbacks to events in the intertwined lives of the main characters during previous incarnations. The dragon doesn't actually make an appearance until about half way through the series. The books in the first two quartets might be too long for you, but they get shorter in the last 7 books (a trilogy & another quartet).

All the books in both series are available as epub and kindle versions.

Funny thing...I read this thread yesterday and then last night this book recommendation came up on my FB feed so I had to share.

Author: Daniel Arenson
He has 5 series about dragons set in the same world. Book 1 of the Song of Dragons trilogy, Blood of Requiem, is free on Amazon.

http://smile.amazon.com/Blood-Requie...4560206&sr=1-4

I have not read these books so I can't say if they are good or bad, but I will say it looks intriguing and I have added the first book to my TBR list.

I read this series long before I read the Liveship Traders cycle. I enjoyed it a lot and I didn't suffer from not reading the series in order.

Re-reading The Pastel City by John M. Harrison at the moment. This book revolutionized fantasy. It made a deep impression on a young Iain M. Banks. I'm surprised it's not better known. The series is available as Viriconium in the Fantasy Masterworks Series. Recommended.

Glen Cook's Black Company series. None of the books are super long and all of them are fun reads.

I don't recall dragons as featuring in this series. This is the OP's main requirement.

It's not a series and it's boring as can be.
