And here I thought you were going to end up by saying "Now I have to buy one for HER, cause she likes it so much" .......

Tsssk. Maybe you skipped that 5 minute button introduction. Specially the all important "house" (home; index) button.

And just to add a note of surreality, one of the "Similar Threads" listed below is Friedrich Nietzche's "Beyond Good and Evil."

Hmmm...

Several years ago I allowed my 85 year old Father-in-law to use my computer to surf the net. He set up a Hotmail account by himself.

He then at the weekly dinner with him he announced that he wanted and that I was giving him a full computer system for his birthday. (This was the first that I had heard about it.) Long story short, he got the system and has used it ever since. I did get an email from him once complaining that he could not send emails.

Now imagine if it had folders. If your Mum can lose books in a linear list, how would she manage with hierarchical folders, do you think?

There really is a very good reason why eBook manufacturers have decided to make the library "flat" on these devices .

Probably, but it would be nice, if they had the option hidden under advanced settings, which would mean that those of us who want or need that option can use it, while most other people who don't can stick to the linear interface.

I thought that too... and then I thought about the experience that started this thread, and imagined someone trying to undo turning on folders after accidentally setting it....

I still think it would be a good option to have (and I use folders on my iLiad), but I can sort of understand why Amazon marketing didn't want to go there.

My dad got his first computer about four years ago, To this day I still spend hours on the phone with him trying undo something he did, He is always misplacing downloads and attachments from email. If I were a normal tech support guy at say 10 bucks an hour and he was my only customer, I could retire!!

i have a friend who is barely computer literate. she can send a mail, but she needs my help to add a site to her bookmarks (really), to add an address to her address book, to create an automatic signature... and god help me when her wifi needs to be reconfigured.

Exactly, and I think that this is what we have to bear in mind when looking at the feature set of these devices - they are being targetted as people like Jerry's dad and Zelda's friend, not at us computer experts. People like that store ALL their documents on a Windows machine in the "My Documents" folder, and are genuinely clueless about how to find a document should they accidentally put it somewhere else.

When my Dad retired, he wanted me to go help him buy a computer. I refused. No way on God's green earth was I going to be responsible for teaching my parents how to use a computer! I'm a patient person, but not that patient. Instead I enrolled them in an introduction to computers course offered by the continuing education center at the local college. Boy, was it worth it! At the end of the class, they bought a computer ALL BY THEMSELVES! I was SO proud! They also took a course that covered the basics of Word, e-mail, and internet. I got a few crazy calls during the first year or so but they were fine after that.

Maybe you want to consider sending your Dad back to school?
