Do you not see the same?
With my paperwhite, I can see the page number displayed when reading a book on the lower left corner. It shows just the page number not total page count. If I tap the top of the screen to open the menu (or open the quick flip option by swiping up from the middle bottom) the PW will then show page # of total pages. So, it does give you a total page count, but you can't see it when reading a book.

aha - I have simply been glancing at the reading pane which has page nnn bottom left, and nn% bottom right

if I tap voyage top of screen to bring up all controls I then do get page x of Y at bottom left

so we're all correct

Really. I was wondering if that might not be the explanation...
I wonder why Amazon designed it that way?

To mimic paper books I'd guess. Relatively few paper books show "Page X of Y" as a page number (although documents like legal contracts often do).

Personally, I'd prefer to see "page x of y" directly on the page, but going to the menu or the page flip screen to see how many pages are in the book isn't too hard.

It isn't too hard, but it is also pointless to need to do so.

@HarryT -- well, they didn't want to mimic paper books in the view from the menu overlay. Nor did they mimic the paper book when it came to things like location, TLTR, annotations, TTS, search inside the book... in other words, this is an ebook, not a pbook, there is no fundamental goal to imitate the pbook. There is a fundamental goal to create a better reading experience.

And IMHO it would be a better reading experience to display the total page numbers as well. It certainly couldn't hurt, there is plenty of space there.

Steady on - I did say that my suggestion was a guess. I have no more idea why Amazon do things that way than anyone else does.

I completely agree.
The counter argument is that some readers may prefer a minimalist "nothing but the words" view , no distractions. Amazon do let you toggle off page and location numbers.
Like some folks want their hiFi from a box with no controls, for that "purer" sound

Understood. Just stating my reasons why I don't guess as you do.

Not before I upload the book andread 10 pages or so. Now, I can do an almost perfect estimate by looking at the page number in calibre. If i don't have a lot of time, for example, I won't start a 1200 page book; I'll choose a 250 page one.
