I wouldn't know my ascenders from a a hole in the ground. Only thing that jumps out at me is that the 'b' got its tail bobbed.

Thin letters like "t" and "i" get kerned. Wide letters like "m" and "o" generally don't.

Is there an aesthetic reason for this? Looking at "motives" in other fonts, they all seem to have similar spacing characteristics.

I honestly don't know, I'm afraid. Perhaps someone who knows more about font design than I do (and I know very little, I'm afraid!) can answer your question.

Typically, m, n, and o are used to set the spacing in a font --- one can add in e as well. The idea is to set the sidebearings so that minimal kerning / post-adjustment is needed so that the font works well in apps w/o kerning or when it's turned off.

Thus, even when kerning is active, m,n,o are set using their natural sidebearings.

FWIW, having a lot of kerning pairs to me is a warning sign that the font was poorly spaced.

I'm hard pressed to see any difference between these two fonts. But then, I use the default font on my Kindle and never change the settings.

Right, it'd be a shame if a company were able to license a design for their own purposes, and that a typeface designer should license a font design w/ the expectation that it would see a limited specific use, and afford the possibility that others would license the design, or similar work from him/her.

If you like the font, either see about licensing it, buy a license for a similar design, find a similar free font, or create a similar typeface yourself from scratch.

Because the spacing is a bit wider, it makes it easier to read. I like it.

Google usually makes all fonts commissioned for their products available on Google Fonts. If you don't want to wait for the official release, you could simply download the Google Play Books APK file and extract the fonts.

If they release it on Google Fonts, I will upload my eInk modifications here. It works perfectly nice on Glo after some modifications. I could also add that glyph for you then, are you talking about U+00A0?

Probably U+202F. A0 is the "normal" non-breaking space.
