![]() That being said, it is one mode of the Kindle ss_hack. I think some people just like the aesthetics of it. |

The problem, as I see it, isn't that wasted page turn, it's that if the text was just there waiting for me when I pick up the device I could start reading as I turn it on and not have to wait for it to finish. Actually maybe "problem" is the wrong word. It's that I'd prefer to pick it up and just start reading. The wasted page is a very tiny negative. Being able to simply look and start reading before I do anything is a nice little positive.
I always used to keep a bookmark in a paperback so I could instantly go to that page. If the bookmark got lost it wasn't a problem. I could always find my place easily enough. It was just a nice feeling not to have to. Getting to my page now with my Kindle is easier than it was when I lost a bookmark in my paperback but not a lot easier. Not having to do that would be pretty nice. I'm not trying to make a big thing out of this. Obviously it's a pretty minor issue. But it's a minor issue that I think hasn't been thought through very well in ereaders so far. Barry |

No problem on my side of this! Besides it would have to be a HIGHLY desirable feature that the hardware vendor is being incredibly stupid over for me to mess with a hack. I'm too lazy, I guess!

when I bought my voyage (UK) recently , there was no with/without offers choice.
just £169 take it or leave it. and AFAIK there's never a sale price on the voyage; the older PW goes £10 off now & again i.e. £99 or £109. maybe the voyage with offers is USA only ? though I do have them on my Kindle fire My voyage does not show offers, it does have at least one screen saver, but as it is only visible in that 1 second between picking up the device & pressing the wake up switch, I've never taken a mental inventory of any variations. and with an auto sleep/wake cover , if I ever get one, I'd never see them at all. |

When I bought my Voyage last year from the U.S. via a re-shipper I chose the one with the special offers only because the delivery date was a lot earlier.
I put up with the extra page swipe for a couple of months but decided it was well worth $20 to get rid of them. I had to contact Amazon to remove the offers, as the usual button in 'my account' to do this was missing as I am not in the U.S. Amazon very generously removed the offers for free, although I was more than happy to pay for this. They really have the best customer service. Last edited by cadele; 05-16-2015 at 08:34 PM. Reason: Removal of extraneous comma |

Honestly it doesn't make any difference if you pay the extra $20 now or not. If you can't stand the ads, just pay the $20 later and shut them off. Meanwhile, should it work out that you don't care (or even like the ads) you've saved $20.

If you buy amazon books, use calibre to sideload or download via calibre server, don't register the kindle, and use an auto shut off case, you will be able to open the cover and read immediately without paying the $20. Of course, you can't use any of the cool features like vocabulary builder but it is an option. Plus the case is $15 shipped to your house (fintie). We don't see any ads mostly because wifi is turned off and the device is not registered.

When the ads first came out my Kindles had to come without ads because I live in Mexico. I did add the advertisements for a few days, thought they were a nuisance, and got rid of them.
For me, no ads is worth the $20. Actually, since not having ads allows me to simply open my cover and start reading I have spent approximately $.0001 per swipe avoided. |

There seem to be two kinds of people in the world: Those who think ads are a potential source of valuable marketplace information, and those who think ads are untrustworthy graffiti that muck-up whatever medium they invade in order to maximize the advertiser's profit by shouting exaggerated, misleading, sales pitches and using psychological manipulation and other P.T. Barnum baloney to get people to part with their money by creating desire for things for which they had felt no prior need.
For the former, accepting "Kindle Special Offers" makes sense. For the latter, $20 to dismiss the ads may be a great deal, but I'm waiting for the price to drop to $19.98. |
