The PI is much easier to use than the built in option, particularly if one works without all the clutter of Book Details panes (which essentially provides no more information than what is in the main display if one is disinterested in non embedded covers), etc. open, and does not want a lengthy list of keyboard shortcuts to remember. With the selected book just one click on the tool-bar and another on the selected application and that's it.

I certainly hope it is not allowed to die because of claims that there is no longer any need for it.

@cybmole - if you're asking -- so, how do I select a specific program with point and click, look at my previous post

Select the format you're interested in, click Open with button, double click the program you want to use. In my example that would be ADE, Sigil, calibre book viewer, or WinRAR. I, of course, would use the kb short cuts

I just noticed Kovid included the ability to change the icon *

Added 1 @Anothercat - no need for kb shorts.

Click the View icon drop down, select View specific format you want, click Open with button, double click the program you want to use. Not too different from Windows/File Explorer.

IMO the fewer PI's one has, the less things to go wrong. I hasten to add I probably wouldn't be using calibre were it not for the plugins.

Added 2 And at the risk of repeating myself yet again

As for the future of the OW PI - that's up to the guy who wrote it.

I'm often surprised at how often Mobileread members don't... read what's already been written in a relatively short thread before posting their negative reactions.

Yes I am aware of that route but as I said, the plugin is more convenient for the circumstances I pointed out - mouse click count for your method above = 5 plus further navigation distances in between clicks.

Versus: Mouse clicks with the Open With plugin =2 with almost zero navigation distance (just that in the drop down).

For myself I did read the thread and understood every bit of it. That understanding together with that of the Open With PI led me to point out that the PI is much easier to use for the circumstances I set out.

I would have hoped that would be seen as a comment rather than a negative reaction as I, unlike someone else did with regard to the PI , did not claim that there was no longer a need for the built in option.

Now, if using the built in option I can get to the opened application with 2 clicks and trivial navigation between then I am all ears and would welcome that ability to be able to do so.

I don't believe there is any intention to delist the Open With plugin, and it won't magically stop working just because there is a builtin alternative ...

And davidfor has implied he will continue supporting, which should help if any bugfixes or incompatibility with new calibre changes show up.
I also suggested in the support thread that it is still needed for WinXP.

One reason I think the built in OW its much better is because its aware of what the user has configured with Windows Open With. Makes it easy to for new users especially -one thing less to learn - this is what calibre offers me for MP4 files - out of the box. Setting those up with the PI would a pain in the butt

Aaah - but you didn't address a specific user - that means you were addressing the thread in its entirety

Sin taxes the best of us, and sem antics can get you in a whole lot of trouble.

Poor little Kiwis indeed - living off Aussie taxpayer funded wine subsidies, and foisting their blight ridden apples onto us.

Thank you for all the extra info. My head swirls from trying to take it all in.
Hence a follow-on question to this thread (and a long shot but maybe I get lucky): I have a tendency to forget keyboard shortcuts within a short period of time (hence my being a very happy GUI user). In windows, shortcuts are marked on the menu entries by having an underscore under the letter that is used for the shortcut. Is there anything I can use that displays my shortcuts on the screen in caliber as a visual reminder? Many thanks,

Anywhere the GUI menu option shows up in calibre, it will print the corresponding keyboard shortcut afterward (if applicable, of course).

You can also check through the list in Preferences at any time.

Whoa...I must have an extremely selective brain.....I have looked at GUI menus in Calibre for some years now and I hardly ever registered that keyboard shortcuts are right there in the menus. Thanks for putting up with my "blindness" and pointing out the obvious.

Kovid: yeah, the most obvious does not seem to register with me. Again.
