This is a test? Right!

@K8HW - reboot into Windows safe mode

Quote:
you can force a Safe Mode restart. Click the Start button and type MSCONFIG in the Search box. Click the Boot tab in the System Configuration dialog box and select the Safe Boot box in the Boot options area. Then just do a normal restart and the computer will automatically restart in Safe Mode.

You'll need to reverse the process in order to restart into standard Windows Vista mode. Click the Start button and type MSCONFIG in the Search box. Click the Boot tab in the System Configuration dialog box and deselect the Safe Boot box in the Boot options area. Then just do a normal restart.
If calibre works in safe mode some 3rd party application is being meddlesome. Are you running any programs you didn't run before, has anything been updated of late, any beta software - try exiting them.

Then I would progressively close other programs (including, and especially, those in the 'system tray') and do calibre restarts between - ie a process of elimination.

Oh - a long shot from the locker room to 9th green - create a new library and copy some books into it -- using calibres copy books option in the book list right click menu. Switch to new library and do a range select.

I have found that if I hit the "number" at the beginning of the row (calibre order) you cannot select a group of rows. You need to click in the first column of the first book you want to select, go to the last book and while holding the shift key down, click in the first column of that book. All should be selected!

Well, it works for me anyway...

As Goldilocks says - but if not that, and as you infer that selection with keys works, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your wired (I assume USB) mouse in Device Manager?

i can replicate that. ( windows 7 , latest 64 bit calibre)

but range select with either shift key works normally if I click any other part of the row.

clicking only the numbers is tricky so I would never have noticed if not wanting to test deliberately

goldilocks & cybmole THANKS!! That is exactly what I am experiencing. I usually click on the number instead of something else in the row so that I don't accidentally change something such as the title. That has happened to me in the past.

I find that I can click on the number for the beginning of a selection and then click on something such as title for the end of a selection and it works!

I would like to thank all who have given input to this phenomenon. Great group!

K8HW - Who would have thunk

You can fix that issue of accidental cell edits via this tweak:

Name:	Capture.JPG
Views:	274
Size:	124.9 KB
ID:	138006

To edit a cell you'll have to hit F2

BR, I applied your suggestion and I really like the behavior. Thanks again. Everytime I would hit 'Q' in a column such as author, I had to be careful! Now that is not a worry.

However, I do have a stupid question! How did you know that you had to hit F2? If you hadn't told me I would be having another bad day!

That's an old Windows trick. I've used it for a very long time to rename files :-)

@K8HW - see Keyboard Shortcuts

@copywrite - F2 for 'rename' is not a Windows trick. It's usage predates release of Windows 2.0 by a decade or more, IIRC it was 'formally incorporated' within the IBM SAA/CUA standards in the early/mid 1980's.

Yep - I have the book right here on my programming books' shelf:

"System Application Architecture Common User Interface: Advanced Interface Design Guide". IBM SC26-4582-0.

The "Bible" of Windows UI design at one time, although admittedly that time was rather a lot of years ago .
