I do not think IR precision could be "enhanced" through software in any way. I think Kobo IR lamps and/or detectors are just more separated than Sony IR ones. So Sony IR sees things Kobo IR is just not capable of seeing...

Maybe you could improve software response time (from detection of a touch gesture to its action) through coding optimization or tweaks, (they say it has been done in 3.15.0 but I feel it behaves more or less the same at least while reading kepubs), but not the performance of the IR detection itself.
