Okay, that was actually a K3 that I recently reset, my bad.

That said, I just dusted off my K5, and, yep, it works, I got an updated book on connect that must have been pending for quite a while ;D.

Can you actually download stuff if you do it manually (i.e., from the Cloud section of the HomeScreen)? What about browsing the Kindle Store on device? Are you testing with Amazon-bought books, or Personal Documents stored on the Kindle Cloud?

Thanks for the feedback.

No I don't know much about it. Bought on eBay a couple of months ago to replace my broken one so don't know about its history.

Yes, I'm coming to the same conclusion - if people who know a lot about these devices are puzzled then there is maybe something fundamentally wrong with it.

I can browse the Kindle store and have just successfully downloaded both an Amazon-bought book from the Cloud and a (free) sample from the Kindle store onto my device.

I guess the only way I can get a book from Amazon onto the Kindle would be to download it to my iPad, copy it from my iPad to my PC, load it into Calibre and copy it from there onto the Kindle...

Thanks again, Stephen

Actually, it's not as complicated as I thought to get a book onto the Kindle; Amazon provide a USB transfer. Sorry - I'm very much learning how these things work...

Does your device display a document entitled: "Kindle User's Guide"?

If it does, have you read it?

Oooohkay, so, what is it that's broken? Stuff marked as pending from the Manage My Content (or whatever it's now called) webpage in your Amazon account? (And, as a byproduct, stuff sent over email, Send To Kindle, and stuff bought from the website 1-clicked to said device)?

What's broken is pretty much as you say, downloading of books via Whispernet; nothing on my pending list appears on my Kindle. I haven't tried emailing stuff yet. Before the jailbreak, When I bought a book on Amazon, it would automatically appear on my Kindle. I could also send all the books I had previously bought to this new (to me) device. After the jailbreak, this no longer happens, and trying to deliver books just leaves them in the pending list. Copying stuff from Calibre via USB is fine, which is where I started with all this, and Collection Manager seemed to work really well.

Knc1 - sorry, not sure what you're getting at. Yes I've read the manual but there's a lot in it. What have I missed? Copying stuff via USB is OK, but doesn't help if I'm away from home with no access to a PC.

Thanks, Stephen

My best guess from the limited information -

This used device previously had Doukan installed on it and not all related changes have been reversed (un-installed).

Unlike the K3 in another recent thread here, the K5 Doukan **IS** sensitive to the presence of our jailbreak file.
(And the K5 era was when they started trying to run their own on-line cloud and store.)

I suggest that it is time to start over with a known good system image (and clean-up of /var/local).
I.E: Kubrick time.

Thanks knc1. Is there a thread on how I should go about this? Can you advise on what system image I should go for and how to apply it?

Kubrick is described in one of the sticky threads on this forum's index page.

It is a PC bootable "Wizard" and includes the system image to be used.

Read the directions about what options are available, I am pretty sure there is an option to clear out /var/local in Kubrick (in addition to installing a clean Amazon system image, which is already Jailbroken).

Bullet #4 in the Kubrick top post:
Quote:
Can (optionally) reset internal configuration settings (K4/KT)
You want to select that option to clear out prior owner's /var/local changes.

Hmm, life's never simple is it...

To cut the last few hours short, debricking failed on my PC, failed on a VM but I managed to get it working on an old laptop successfully.

So, Kubrick worked and so did the Kindle OK afterwards. I chose the options to jailbreak and clear out local settings but did not reformat the drive.

Amazon very kindly automatically downloaded software updates to the firmware. There's a post on the Kubrick thread that says it was OK to update the firmware so I applied these. My firmware version is back up to 5.3.7.2.

Collections Manager fails to run with the 'not authorised' message so I tried to apply the MKK but this failed with 'Update Error 007'. I cannot find any reference to this error in the forum. The same error occurred when trying the Dummy Hack update.

Kubrick says it comes with a jailbroken image, so I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do next to get Collections Manager working. I assume that the Kindle is jailbroken - is there a way of telling?

The image flashed might not actually be jailbroken, but there's a live jailbreak setting somewhere in Kubrick, IIRC.

Regardless, it might just plain be easier to reinstall the jailbreak as if nothing had ever happened. Unless I'm forgetting stuff, you should be able to JB 5.3.7.2 without jumping through any hoops.

Looks like it's now fixed

Yup. That all seems to have worked now. I didn't want to try the JB without advice in case I broke something. The restart showed the *** MKK K JB *** message.

So the solution was:

Kubrick debrick to firmware 5.2.1 plus clearing out local settings
Update firmware with Amazon updates to 5.3.7.2
Jailbreak 1.14.N

Thanks knc1 - I guess you hit the nail on the head in suggesting the Kindle had something dubious installed on it.

Thanks to both knc1 and NiLuJe for your patience in seeing me through this. A big learning curve but I am the better for it. I appreciate your expertise and am glad in a funny sort of way that it wasn't a trivial problem, which means I don't feel too much of a numpty and that the few hours of my time (not to mention yours) were actually spent constructively.

Cheers, Stephen

That is good.

About the only explanation for one-of-a-kind behavior is a one-of-a-kind change or error.

What we had you do was replace nearly everything (firmware) that is replaceable in a KT. (The big hammer approach to repairs.)

We have no way to know how many copies of Kubrick have been downloaded, let alone the number of Kindles it has been used on.
But from the view count, it must be an awful lot of them.
