i posted only because the OP seems to be confusing two different functions
i.e he said " ...I downlowded modify... and ran polish", and also "I find the cover on my ebook readers a useless waste of space and of battery" I will be fascinated to hear how much much battery life he finally saves, once all of his covers are zapped. and how those "battery savings" stack up against the electricity used to remove the covers. it is news to me that having static image files resident on an e-reader is consuming battery . having trolled that though, I can see the case for not wanting covers to be automatically added to a memory starved device, but it's for someone who needs that change to be made to propose it via correct channels. I like seeing my book thumbnails on my readers. All store bought books will download with covers if bought from amazon/kobo.. stores. So at best you can strip covers only from de-drmed + sideloaded books. |

![]() Except for the storage space consumed, I find the space argument (standard res images) to be a bit extreme considering modern devices. If they are running on a c2000 PDA, I can understand (but weren't those book mostly plain text?). Battery consumption is based upon Work Done. Rendering Static covers is very brief use of power resources. I would guess, not much more than rendering the current PAGE, and there are way more of those. Keep the cover. Delete the body and save LOTS of battery ![]() |

Could a custom calibre device output profile scale the cover images to extremely small, if space must be saved

Unless we are talking 5MB hi-res cover images, I don't see the problem.

Preferences:Common Options: Output Profile:
If you hover over the names, you see the screen size in the Help MS Reader lists a small size. That should shrink the images (and maybe make them Monochrome, which make the file even smaller) |

Thans to everybody for the confirmation.
Sooner or later I will learn how to write a plug-in and I will do it :-) |

what is your reading device ?
it may be better for you to transfer your books manually rather than let calibre do it, then you can move only the coverless epubs from calibre library directly onto your device, using windows or whatever to copy the epub files from calibre library. stick to copy, not move, & you should do no damage. e.g. for each book. strip its cover with modify epub, then use open path in right window to show the file location. copy the epub file from there using your OS, and paste it either to a device folder or to some temp holding area ready for a manual copy when you connect the device |

Quote:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Once Modify EPUB has run, the EPUB is coverless -- calibre doesn't add a cover on send-to-device. As I already pointed out above. ... But that is irrelevant, since the OP mentioned his Kindle, and indeed that is in his profile as well. And the OP only wants to know at this point, how to duplicate the effects of Modify EPUB for AZW3. |

perhaps if you spent more time reading what the OP asked and less time attacking anyone else who dares to try to help...
post #1 "Is there any way to remove the cover(s) embedded in all the e-books file (azw3, mobi, epub)...." so I gave a simple work-around for epub. and yes, calibre does not embed a new cover on "send to device" but it does send separate .jpg cover images to some devices, which the OP wants to NOT have sent .... I have a solution for azw3 but as you will most likely rip it to shreds just because it's not your idea , I'll not post it.... .... leaving the thread now.. you can have it all to yourself. |

If you have a solution for AZW3 feel free to share it.
I am not in the habit of "ripping ideas to shreds because it's not my idea", although yes I will point out when someone has a track record of coming late to the party and repeating someone else's answer. In this particular case you make a good point -- calibre sideloads thumbnails of the cover, which the OP may not want any more than the embedded covers. I admit I did not think of or consider that. Next time, I suggest you actually say so in the first place. You may have the gift of prophecy, but I do not -- I can only know what you say, not what you mean. |
