I believe iTunes sells all current music DRM-free, but leaves you with DRMed purchases you may have made previously.

Once you've liberated a kepub, what do you need to do to make it readable on a standard epub reader? (Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall seeing kepub as one of the conversion options on Calibre.)

It is already readable -- well, it may be an EPUB3.
![]() It should have the file extension .kepub.epub, so, EPUB readers can read it... but the Kobo KEPUB reader doesn't see regular .epub files. |

It's generally a usable ePub as is, but using the Modify ePub plug-in in Calibre helps remove the extra "Kobo bits" by checking the "Strip Kobo DRM remnants" check box.

DRM free kepubs just need to be renamed to have the extension "epub". But, if you liberate them using the Obok plugin, it will be added to your calibre library as an epub. Then follow AnemicOak's suggestion, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

That, and the fact that the Kobo devices will use a different rendering engine with (artificially-restricted-to-)KEPUB-only features.

The pedant in me has to say: Not really "kepub only features" but features implemented in only one of the two reader apps on the device. The only "feature" that I can think of that needs the changes in a kepub is the position reference used for the current reading positions and annotations.

![]() ![]() Agreed, artificially-restricted-to-KEPUB-only features then. Fixed. |

Are you implying that Kobo has the ability to add those features to the RMSDK engine and chooses not to? Or that the ACCESS engine has the ability to read Adobe DRM epubs and provide the same features on them as it does on kepubs? As far as I know, neither is true, but I would be happy to learn otherwise.

Kobo could choose to add said features to the RMSDK-rendered books.

IMO, Kobo would not be adding features to either renderer. ACCESS would handle changes for their renderer and it appears that they are moving to using the Readium codebase. The Adobe RMSDK used by Kobo is (I think...) supported by Datalogic. Going by Adobe's website, RMSDK 11 is moving towards supporting enough epub3 features to start calling it an epub3 renderer. One caveat is that Adobe never quite made it to full support of epub2. One suggestion about the future of RMSDK is that RMSDK will use the Readium code base with an Adobe ADEPT DRM wrapper. I would disagree that this is an artificial distinction -- when Kobo was first looking at the Japanese market, RMSDK did not support enough language features to support Japanese typography with it's mixture of text directions, the use of three writing systems in kanji (a ideographic writing system), katakana and hiragana (two different phonetic alphabets), furigana (smaller kana glyphs beside or above (depending on text direction) a kanji glyph for pronunciation assistance), etc. Last edited by DNSB; 03-17-2015 at 07:22 PM. |

And there is no real reason Kobo can't open DRM-free epubs with the kepub reader. The reading position system used is the problem. I would be surprised if the ACCESS engine doesn't also support either the RMSDK or the epub3 reading position. My assumption has been that Kobo has turned this off and added their own position system as part of the justification of their own format. Or, they implemented it a long time ago and have decided to keep it. |

One good thing about the Kobo store is that they make it very easy to tell what sort of DRM an individual book is using. Anything marked "Download options: EPUB2 (DRM-Free)" will allow you to save the epub file on your PC and copy it to any device that uses epubs.
Lately I've been trying to see just how much DRM-free material I can find on the Kobo store (and elsewhere). There's quite a lot out there, actually. I've been recording the results in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=257084 |

This site has a huge list of DRM-FRee books/sites. Many of them are going to be small publishers or individual authors/indie:
