The Kobo Readers are very good. They allows you to use Calibre (using the Kobo Utilities plugin) to create collections. So once the plugin is configured, creating collections on a Kobo is trivial. As for the light, it's a frontlight. |

I'd suggest the Kobo Glo (6" infrared touch, but might be harder to find now), Kobo Aura (6" capacitive touch), or Kobo H2O (6.8" infrared). All Kobo readers sort into collections out-of-the-box just by sending the books from Calibre to the reader and setting which tags or series you want as collections. All 3 Kobos have a backlit screen. Those who have both the Glo and Aura say the text is a bit sharper on the Glo, but it's being phased out and could be harder to find at this point. Patches to get even more customizable settings are available, there's no jailbreaking involved at all.

Thanks for all the input!
Is it possible to see wheter you've read a particular book on the Aura? There are a line of small dots under each book cover on the Kindle. The size of the dots indicate how much I've read of the particular book. Can a book belong to more than one collection on the Kobo? And can that be handled by calibre? |

On the kindle, if you reposition yourself back to page 1 of a book, those dots go away. SOOO you can't alway tell.
![]() PS Maybe I'm too old school -- again, I use my off-kindle list (or a different list) to keep track of what I HAVE read, and what date. Just cause I like to know. Occasionally I search for when I read that particular book. For instance, I just realized that I read a whole dozen Pratchett books just last year. I'm catching up on his stuff too fast; gonna run out! I thought I was saving them up and savoring them. I guess I can always start over. ) PPS I search the Kindle Clippings file to get the date on the last few books I've read ... then I delete the clippings file. To keep it small. The Kobo's library has a finished/unfinished flag, but, much like the Kindle, if you reopen the book, that goes away. (On the other hand, you can explicitly flag a book as finished or not straight from the library, without opening it).
Speaking of Kobos, I'd wait a few weeks, the sucessor of the Aura will likely be announced soon™. If you don't care about a bundled/connected store, you might also want to take a look at stuff from Bookeen or Pocketbook, they're still alive and kicking, and doing interesting stuff. If you care about it, the issue of dictionaries is also important (and one area where the Kindle pretty much annihilates the competition, at least for the English language, IMHO. NODE/OAED FTW. Kobo's EN dictionary pretty much makes me want to gouge my eyes out). Last edited by NiLuJe; 03-12-2015 at 05:24 PM. |

Yes. I have books in collections by both series and by genre. I try to limit genre to just 1 per book, but you could have them under various genres also if you preferred. And it's all handled nicely by Calibre putting them automatically into the collections on transferring the book to the reader.

Yay, serial port (written by a long time hardware person).
Shall we start a betting pool on which will happen first: Will Amazon take away our serial port access? or; Stop spending millions of dollars to keep a few thousand (out of millions of) users out of the device? |

Again - thank you everybody for you valuable input!
I've ordered a Kobo Aura and expect to recieve it tomorrow. I found it to a good price. When I have both devices in my hands I will decide wether to keep both or sell one. |

Two questions :-)
1. Originally I sideloaded a couple of books to my KPW2 using calibre. Later I updated some of the metadata including some of the covers in in calibre. How do I sync these changes to my device? 2. Most of the books I sideloaded were epub which the KPW2 doesn't read, so the files were converted to mobi. As far as I can see, this means that I now have two versions of each book both on my pc and on my device. Is that correct? If yes is there someway I can delete one of the formats in order to avoid each book taking up double space with out having to handle each book separately? Thanks! |

long time no message post, how about if people are so desperate to get root they send to someone to jailbreak it via serial (for a price of course)

2. the books that you need to sideload on your kindle can be saved in mobi, or azw3 format. though it takes a tad few more steps but ensures space savings. do as follows: a. select the books that have been converted b. click the small down arrow on right side of "Save to Disk" c. Selct "save single format to disk" d. this will give you an option to save either of the formats (Coverted or original). you can save any that you like ( i prefer azw3 as it gives better rendering than mobi imho). then delete the books from calibre and load the converted saved books to calibre again e. send to kindle. f. voila. |
