Thanks for the info, GeoffR and dickloraine, that sounds nice! I don't understand why the kepub reader supports kerning for TTF fonts only, but for me that wouldn't be a problem, since the kebup reader is only necessary for epubs from Kobo's store, yes?

It is only necessary for kepubs, which are kobos flavor of epub3. Not all books in the kobo store are kepubs, they have epubs too. There is also a calibre plugin which converts epub to kepub. That said, I don't buy from kobo and have never looked at tge kepub side. Normal epubs are just fine. Kepubs just have some features like time to read (I really don't know why the epub reader doesn't have it. Even my old sony 350 could do this) but you trade it in for less real estate, since kepubs have a header in addition to a footer.

Sure, see the attached file. Also included are seperate afm files with the kerning information. You can open a font in Fontforge (e.g. the original Charis) and go to "File -> Merge feature info" then select the appropriate afm file. This will merge the kerning information into the opened font. The Charta kerning should work perfectly for Charis Regular and Bold, but it will probably not look good for Italic and Bold Italic as I respaced these fonts.

It turns out both the KEPUB and EPUB readers on Kobo devices do support kerning with sideloaded fonts. Kerning should work in the EPUB reader with any font, but the KEPUB reader requires a font with old style TTF kerning tables, which is an option when converting the font to TTF format. See this thread.
