With the Kindle 3/Kindle Keyboard, and probably the earlier models, you can press Alt-Shift-G simultaneously to take a screen shot. A .gif of the screen is then saved in the Documents folder. Connect the device to a PC, and you can then make a high-quality print. Not real convenient, but will work for the occasional recipe found in a Kindle-format cookbook. And I just verified that it still works with the new version 3.4.1 software. |

I would recommend a laptop for that task. A laptop can do a little trick that a Kindle can not - stand up by itself.

Indeed, which is why I did it. I was surprised/disappointed that closing the cover didn't put the Kindle to sleep. I was hoping the command would just affect the auto-sleep, not the cover induced sleep.

If you prefer to turn device off rather than sleep, why would a screen saver matter?
I don't need a timer. Never would work for sleep. I don't use screen savers on anything. I just turn the device off. Since device isn't in use every day, no big deal. Computers just go black after a certain time. That isn't really a screen saver. I don't have room for a laptop where I'm cooking. Flour would wind up down the keys as would any other powdery ingredient. Do you get the same benefits of the Kindle if you use the app? I can probably find an even cheaper android wifi only tablet and use that, but I do prefer eink for reading anything. Tablets glare. I don't want any app like Kindle, Nook, Kobo on more than one device. Since I have both an Android tablet and a phone I don't want Google books at all. |

For cooking a tablet should be nice. There are also many apps for recipes etc. I for example use mycookbook. I can import recipes from the web, type them in myself etc. It can recalculate ingredients for as many or few people I need. I can click on the time in the recipe to start a timer.
Or you could use the tts abilities to let the tablet read the instructions loud for you. I think there are cooking apps who do this too, even waiting for a command word, so that you don't need to touch the tablet. In short: I would think that a tablet is more versatile and ultimately more useful in a kitchen. |

Where does "My Cookbook" search? Any website? I have a wifi printer and print the recipes out. I hate buying a cookbook for only one recipe.
I assume Amazon Apps would have it. Wouldn't have to deal with Google. Would downloading the Kindle app allow the same purchases? The stand sounds good for either reader or tablet. You can buy plain covers for devices. |

I got the Touch. It does pretty well. Can't use the software that dickloraine recommended.
I usually print out pages but I can save web page as full HTML or copy it and open it in Libre Office. Where does Amazon store the books, and can you specify which books to keep in cloud storage? There are a lot of interesting cookbooks which I don't mind buying, but I probably won't do 75% of the recipes. I've found that I can copy and paste from both the Kindle reader for PC and Calibre into Libre Office. I can then format pages to my taste and export as PDF. I wouldn't want the whole cookbook taking up room on the device or my computer. Eventually I can format my own cookbook compilation in Libre Office as a PDF. I've converted a couple of pages and used a recipe the other day. The Kindle did very well. I will invest in a stand and a cover. |

If you want books to go in cloud storage, you will need to email them, also check http://amzn.com/myk and confirm your Personal Documents Service settings are set to keep a copy in the cloud (rather than just WhisperSyncing to the device).

When I got the Kindle, it said something about when the device was full it would transfer some books off the device to an account where you could access them. What did that mean?
I'd prefer to shift some books myself. |
