I am reading Kindle Unlimited books for reasons that are beyond the current topic. I seem to be finding a lot of alien invasion books among the sci-fi kindle unlimited books.

So then what you meant to say was; "the small subset of science fiction I'm limiting myself to seems to be offerring limited themes."

Yes, mostly indie books, which tend to be very generic.
Oddly enough, the only recent alien invasion books I have read were the two Marko Kloos Frontlines books I got through the Kindle Lending Library. (Not indie as such, but 47North.) I really enjoyed them, but I'm reading plenty of other things too. |

I thought the recent pervasive SF theme was mysteries involving remotely controlled androids (Scalzi's Locked In, Gibson's The Peripheral), both on the Locus best SF of 2014 list.

I'm always a sucker for a good alien invasion, especially when it's an underdog/last stand scenario.
