No no no!

Australians buy more ebooks ==>
Less ebooks available elsewhere ==>
Prices rise due to shortage ==>
Sales fall due to overpriced ebooks.

My issue is with the idea that sales fall here due to overpricing, when they do the oppposite in Australia.

The good thing about these Australian figures is that they are based on a survey of readers, rather than of publishers. I think that is the only way to get a reasonable measure of ebook sales.

Edit: However it would be nice to know how library lending figures for ebooks compare to purchases.

They say that ebook sales are declining in the US and UK, but considering the ebook subscription services and the indies that tend to not get included in many of these analyses, I don't think that sort of statement can really provide any real information. Are they trying to say that ebook reading is decreasing in these markets or are they saying that authors are making less money from ebooks in these markets? Those definitely aren't equivalent statements.

I guess my take home is: Congratulations Australians (?)

I had that thought... but I decided it doesn't really explain what happened. You see, the sales would be upside down too, so it would balance out.

I don't know about anyone elses experience but of my 1000 plus ebooks approx 60% are from Amazon with the remainder from Kobo/Sony. I tried to buy from Australian ebook sellers, but they are prohibitively expensive in comparison.

Yep, I agree. Of my 1200 plus ebooks the bulk are from various Kobo country sites, and a lot of free Amazon titles.

The number of Kobo Aus titles I have is minor compared to the rest, and I would have only gotten them with a Kobo discount code or amazon deal of the day.

I'm also surprised at these figures. Australia has some of the highest rates of piracy within the world. Look at recent articles relating to the highest number of illegal downloads for the Game of Thrones TV series.....Australia wins.

In my view it's decidedly "Un-Australian" to buy a book.

Probably wouldn't be so high if we weren't ripped off price-wise in comparison to other comparable countries, this applies to eBooks, DVD,s electronic hardware etc, etc. And they wonder why Australians are buying on the net from overseas in droves.

(How many is a drove by the way!!)

A drove's about as many cattle you can get onto the long paddock and not exhaust yourself, horse or dogs.
