That is a valid complaint (I prefer the clarity and reduced glare due to the lack of capacitive layer and etched glass myself), but I was specifically addressing your characterisation of the Voyage screen-related complaints as stemming from unrealistic expectations.

Would you appreciate it if I said that your dissatisfaction with the infrared touch on the Kobo stems from unrealistic expectations?

One mustn't be dismissive of genuine complaints. Your complaint about the touch on the H2O didn't stem from an unrealistic expectation because there does exist a competing device that did it better (the Voyage). Similarly, the complaints against the Voyage screen do not stem from unrealistic expectations because there does exist a competing device that executed the front lighting better (the H2O).

You're very welcome to say it if you wish, but I don't believe it would be an accurate analysis of the issue.

I'm not being dismissive of anything. If someone is unhappy with the Voyage, then for them it has a real problem, regardless of whether I or anyone else thinks the complaint is valid. I'm not being dismissive of complaints at all: all I'm saying is that I don't believe your view that it is "the norm" to regard the Voyage as defective is a correct one. Yes, there are certainly complaints, but a large majority of users appear to be happy with it.

New device releases always seem to go through the same sequence here at MR:

1. Device is announced, and some people go into ecstatics claiming it'll be the most wonderful thing the world has ever seen, and their life won't be complete until they have one.

2. Device is released.
In the case of the PW1, there was a huge disconnect between the device as advertized prior to release, and the physical reality. Hardly surprising then that 1) people had high expectations and 2) people were angry and disappointed. Amazon's advertising was extremely misrepresentative of the real frontlight.

I traded the voyage in for a pw2 because of the screen and have not regretted it.

I love my Voyage, and once I can shake off my current bout of laziness, I'm going to put my PW2 up for sale.

well there is a volume issue with Kobo as well.

I have been unable to find a place where you can actually buy a Kobo H2O ereader in the USA.

we might find more defects with Kobo if someone actually sold the darn thing!

The last cool ereader I was able to find in the USA was the AuraHD. I really did like Kobo and the reason I was interested was they took over my Sony Library.

I bought one of the early PW1's and it was better than I hoped for. I still have it. I bought a second one because I decided I wanted 3G and it was every bit as good as the first one.

Now I have a PW2 and my older PW1. I sold the first one with Wifi to a friend. I read with both of them. When I'm paying attention I can see a difference but they're both great for reading and I find I don't really care that much which one I'm using.

I'm sure there were some defective Paperwhite 1's but my guess is there were also a lot of people who found barely perceptible imperfections under odd circumstances and returned them, horrified.

I can turn the light all the way up on mine and if I look real close in just the right light I think I can see some kind of imperfection. I'm not very sure. I'm old and my eyes aren't that good. Probably someone younger could see them and would panic.

At reasonable brightness the reading areas of the screens are perfect on both of them.

Glad you got something your happy with. TBH I cant read on a frontlight in the dark, so the issue is moot for me. Though I can see it would be handy in dim lighting.

My replacement turned out to be sightly better but it has pinkish hue on the top right hand corner. I have been trying to avoid seeing it for a long time but I could not bare it anymore so I contacted Amazon UK customer service on sunday to get a replacement. They were very helpful to sent out a replacement for me which I received on the following day. But the replacement is a refurbished unit and it is not better than the one I already have.

I think I am not going to achieve much by asking another replacement since the screen problem is a common production problem with Voyage as far as I gather from the reviews.

Is it a wise decision to go back to PW2 and forget about Voyage until Amazon releases an updated version of it? Voyage killed the joy of reading for me
When considering my first DSLR I was concerned about the complaints concerning "soft" pictures and a flimsy access door for the memory card. I bought the camera anyway and never experienced either problem. After reading about how horrible Windows 8 was I avoided it until I bought a laptop that came with Windows 8..1. I like it. And, there are the horrible, horrible reports of displeasure with Anroid 5.0, Lollipop. I'm using Lollipop and have I none of the problems being reported by some.

I was equally concerned by the comments about horrible color splotches on the PW1 screens. I bought one anyway, got another as a gift, and used my sister's Paperwhite. Amazingly, none had splotches.

So, I have a Voyage now. It's fine. It hasn't killled the joy of reading for me. If I put my Paperwhite and the Voyage side by side the screens are different. The Voyage is a bit warmer. The Paperwhite light is colder. I can't say I like one better than they other. They both work fine for me.

At this point, I do not see any advantages to the Voyage that would justify the higher price.

I have a Paperwhite and a Voyage. Both are "decent" devices. I use Window 8.1, Anroid 5.0, and a digital DSLR. They're are incredibly "decent", too, in spite of rampant whining.

My experience is that some users have a need to whine that is not related to the devices about which they're whining.

I have had a Voyage since launch and love it. I had a screen issue (more yellow at top) but it either went away or I don't notice it anymore. The Voyage is the best eReader I have ever owned and I love it. I've owned every version of the Kindle since the 2nd gen.

Me too. And I upgraded from a PW2 which hubby now has. Tbh if Amazon produced a new updated Voyage this year where they have fixed the screen issue I'll replace my Voyage.

I purchased 6 voyages and all of them had the screen issue where the top half looked different to the bottom. I couldn't accept this for a premium product and ended up buying a pw2 instead.
