I truly hope Abercrombie returns to the original story with more "Bloody Nine".

Thanks guys. I've bought the books now, so I'll be getting going soon.

I am currently reading, and greatly enjoying, Best Served Cold, set in the same world as the First Law trilogy.

have you read his "stand alone" sequels? Red Country is worth a look...grimdark fantasy with a western motif...

I don't like too much of violence and darkness but I just finished Half a king and enjoyed it a lot. It's a fine book and the characters are very human.

Half a King is YA fantasy. He tones down and censors a lot of himself for that one.
I read Best Served Cold recently and it was damn good book. In some ways like more realistic female characters even better than The First Law books.

So if I understand it well his other books are a lot more violent and real dark ? Not sure I will like them in that case even if I really liked his writing and his characters a lot.

Yes, the "First Law" books are extremely violent. In particular they have extremely graphic descriptions of torture.

thanks for answering Harry and Geralt, I don't think I will enjoy reading them, torture is really not my cup of tea.

Best to inform oneself I agree. Although to be fair to Joe, torture isn't what his stories are about, it just happen to reflect the reality of the grim world he has built, but I'm sure you know that having read Half a King and liking it.

Although I can't say I enjoyed the torture scenes, I found the "First Law" books to be absolutely excellent overall. A thoroughly enjoyable read, but of course I appreciate that individual tastes do differ.

I truly enjoyed it, he has a way of writing that reminds me of a good storyteller, he made me care for all the characters and I was taken by the story from the beginning to the end. I don't know if I'm very clear but I have the impression that he respects his own characters.

The problem is that I'm one of those people with a too vivid imagination, I cannot take distance to a story, I'm completely in it, and horror, torture, and all that can make sleep afterwards a very uncomfortable affair. The images stay with me for too long a time and I find that it's just not worth it. It's real annoying sometimes, with books as now, but it also makes choosing a movie with my husband a frustrating thing to both of us.

I completely understand, believe me. I can't watch horror films or read horror stories - they give me nightmares. The unpleasant scenes in Abercrombie's books, however, form a very minor element of the story, but I am wholly sympathetic to your wish not to read them.

yes Half a King (and the sequel - half a world) are YA...some descriptive violence but not to the same level as his "adult" works like First Law...and no torture scenes that i can recall. still quite enjoyable reads
