Correct, up today the flashing can just be made via a SD card.

My mistake, and yes my last post is not useful, as the most you could see the Cybook via the PC as a drive, and if so formatting it, or repairing it could help.

Success!!

Just wanted to update you. I bought a card reader and downloaded the latest update (build 708) this morning. Updated the cybook and hey presto, everything is working again! Thank God! I really didn't want to have to send it back to Bookeen again.

It seems more responsive, certainly the navigation button appears more accurate. Will just have to wait and see if the battery consumption has indeed been improved.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions everyone.

Ciara.

A pleasure. Delighted to hear that it's working again. One suggestion - make a backup of the "system" folder to your PC so that you can easily get it back again if you should somehow manage to corrupt the internal file system.

Will definitely do that! Much easier. Thanks Harry.

Similar problem

My Cybook got stuck when I tried to power it up today -- got to the "three dots" screen but it would go no further (it periodically flashed and reloaded that screen).

I removed the SD card and reset the Cybook...no luck, same problem.

I then attempted to reload 708 and it appeared to go OK...but once again, it got stuck at the same point.

Finally, I did a reflash with 538 and that got things working again...and I was then able to do the update back to 708 and all appears well again.

So--it appears that the internal memory got corrupted. I have no idea how, as all I did was shut the Cybook off last evening. It hasn't been connected to USB in a few days, and I always do the "safely remove hardware" routine before disconnecting.

Strange...and a bit concerning.

It would not suprise me at all if the power off is not handled correctly... It sems to be to many people that have these kind of problems. I nearly never power off my unit and have never seen it. Running out of battery might also cause this.

Battery was at about 80%, so that wasn't the problem. I actually don't turn mine off too often, either...but got into the habit of doing so when I was running 685 (with its drain issues) for awhile, and just did it without thinking last night.

I'll chalk it up to gremlins, I guess...but I'll go back to leaving it always on as I did in the past.
