Oh, I've tried a restart. In fact, the Kindle itself (over the past two days) did two spontaneous restarts.

It appears as if a Reset is the next logical step.

Yes, I'll certainly do that.

-- I want to add, however, that this Kindle is still a wonderful ereader. The lighting is perfect (in my opinion); whereas, the PW1 had the 'raindbow syndrome.'

I expect a Reset will cure all my problems.

The problem is now solved.

To recap, for anyone else who encounters the same problem I had:

1) Backup your ebooks somewhere. (I use calibre.)
2) Do a reset. (This will wipe off all of your content. See step #1.)
3) Register you Kindle to the same account you already have.
4) If you had Collections prior to the reset, the Collections will still exist in the Cloud. If you want to recreate the same Collection name on your Kindle, then you will first have to delete the Collection from the Cloud. You'll then be able to create a Collection with the same name you had prior to the reset. (My own personal work strategy: I no longer download my ebooks directly from Amazon. I download the ebook onto my computer and run it through calibre. I THEN put the ebook onto my Kindle. Everything on my Kindle comes from calibre.)
5) Put your books back on the Kindle. (I use calibre for everything.)

Thank you to everyone who provided advice and information.

If you are sideloading a book from Calibre, do you use the add to device button or do you drag it to the USB folder or do you drag it to the Kindle Cloud Reader?

I used the add to device to load a few books on the Paperwhite and it worked fine, now if I wanted to organize them better, maybe an author collection(folder) or some other subject, what would I do, create the collection in the cloud reader and then drag the book into it?

1) I always use the ADD BOOKS button.

2) After the reset and adding a book (to test), I then attempted to create a Collection on my Kindle called READING. It wouldn't let met do it, because I still had a Collection with that name in the Cloud. (I should add that all the Collections in the Cloud were empty.) I then deleted that Collection in the Cloud, then went back to the Kindle and was able to create a Collection called READING.

Kindles don't use folders for organization. They use collections, which are tags. If you create folders, they will not show up on the Home screen.

That's correct.

I'll change the word 'folder' to 'Collection'.

Thank you.

Dr. Dib is your Kindle jailbroken? If so, maybe something in the jailbreak is broken.

No, it was never JB'd.

I suspect some issues occurred for these reasons listed below (and a combination of unknown issues):

1) When putting my first ebook together, I wanted to see how it would look and to also continue proof-reading on it. Numerous versions were put on, taken off, put on.......etc.

2) I 'purchased' two free Penny Dreadful ebooks, and then then decided to sideload them. When I attempted to delete the original copies from the Kindle, and then checked in the Documents folder (just to make sure), I still saw them there. When I attempted to delete them, I was given a message that the titles were too long and could not be deleted. Even after shortening the titles, they could still not be deleted.

3) When books were deleted, their vanilla covers would still be visible. I had to go through the deletion process twice.

4) Other, unknown issues?

------

The Kindle is now performing flawlessly.

Out of all my ebook readers that I own, I now most often use both the Kindle PW2 and the Kobo Aura HD.

I think the Kindle doesn't like updated eBooks in place of what's there. I think Kindle's prefer the eBooks be deleted first and then put back on.

IME, only when the metadata title is changed, and then only because it will be cached under the old name in the collections -- so it will be hidden in some view modes until you wipe the collection.
