If you like mobi, you can probably just reconvert mobi-to-mobi (and delete the 'original mobi' file). Glad you got it sorted. Welcome to the forum!

The file extension depends where you get the book from. All books downloaded from "Kindle for PC", for example, will have an extension of "AZW". It's Alf's tools that will change the extension to "Mobi" or "AZW3" if you subsequently import them into Calibre. To the best of my knowledge, no book will ever come from Amazon with either of those two extensions.

The majority of the books I download from Amazon are AZW3.

Just downloaded this book as a test (Transfer via Computer option):

AZW will be given the mobi extension when imported into Calibre. AZW3s remain AZW3s.

OK, thanks. Never tried importing a book targeted at an eInk Kindle. But my point still stands: that the file extension will vary depending where you got the book from, and doesn't reliably indicate the format. A file with an extension of ".AZW" may be either an old "MOBI7" or a newer "KF8"-format file, depending where it came from.

Thanks. I never knew that about Kindle for PC—never really used it much. But yes, you are correct. Every single book I downloaded to it was an AZW. Some were old mobi7, some KF8—with and without DRM.

True, but both discussees have E-Ink devices which send AZW (mobi7) and AZW3, additionally, once the book is in calibre it will always be changed... unless the tools are not present in which case this discussion is moot on charges of "this stupid thing is unreadable".

Since you are mentioning Kindle for PC - the only way to sideload an old mobi or new kf8 to it is by renaming the extension to .mobi and it will sideload and show up in Kindle for PC library.

Not true. You can read a book with pretty much any extension (assuming it's a format that it supports) in K4PC simply by right clicking on it in Windows Explorer and using the "Open With..." menu item.

Ah, I stand corrected. I didn't try it that way since it already fails with a drag and drop on program itself (icon works). Tested and everything that gets sideloaded to K4PC also gets added to the local library even azw3 w/o drm filetypes.

Yep - it's a useful technique . And if you want to, of course, you can set K4PC to be the default "handler" for any file extension so it'll open it just by double-clicking the book.
