Except that many books have all kinds of rubbish at the end, so finishing the book is no where near the last page of the ebook.

Kobo is already doing it.

Quote:
Kobo also revealed that the people of Britain were most likely to finish a romance novel, with 62% completion, followed by crime and thrillers (61%) and fantasy (60%). Italians were also most engaged by romance (74% completion), while the French preferred mysteries, with 70% completion.

Although none of my ebooks can possibly be in their count, because I sideload all my cleaned epubs.

I'm pretty sure my Fire is still providing Amazon with some stats from my some of my sideloaded books. When I upgraded to the new HDX I sideloaded my books from Calibre to CC on my Fire (just like I had on my old Fire) including books I'd already read. When I opened the books I had already read I was asked on most of them if I wanted to go to the last place read.

This is fascinating. On both the UK and Canadian lists, there is not a single book that is common to both the top 10 downloaded and top 10 read. Is there an article like this for the US?

I wonder if it's for this reason - i.e., to capture data related to sideloaded ebooks and not just to identify pirated content - that Adobe Digital Editions was snooping around on users' devices and phoning home stats about ebooks unrelated to ADE (as I read during the "ADE-gate" brouhaha of October 2014).

I'd like to know what counts as finished, too. What if you just peek at the ending.

For a long, non genre book, 44% is actually pretty high!

lol that's a plus, if you put it that way, but it's an award winning book and I'd think people would try to at least see why it was recognized as such. I haven't purchased the book though; I've read the reviews and most of the non-optimisitc comments are hilarious.

I haven't seen an update yet for the US. Kobo only featured UK and Canada. I also agree that it's only for Kobo so it would include other ereaders statistics like Kindle's. Still it would have been interesting to know the statistics.

Mike

It took me 2 years to finish (slog through) 'Hawaii'
I read a hundred other books in between.
But I did finish it

Yes there are books I just drop off my now reading list (I have a dozen active at most times).

Just because I am not reading a book 'right now' does not indicate I won't ever.
Mr etailer, if I wanted you to know, I would have 'rated' the book. Please stop the snooping and guessing

Especially since it is an award winning book. It got more hype than it naturally would have without the reward.

"Overall, Canadians find romance to be the most engaging genre, with 62 per cent completion, followed by fantasy (60 per cent) and mystery (59 per cent). Romance is also the most engaging genre in Italy (74 per cent), the Netherlands (67 per cent) and Great Britain (62 per cent), while the French (70 per cent), Australians and New Zealanders (64 per cent) and Americans (44 per cent) prefer a good mystery."

I'm quite surprised by the high level of abandonment. It's got to be that people didn't click the last page.

I believe that Kobo synchronizes the last read page between devices, so they could tell whether you finished a book proper and skipped the end material. Even if they didn't know where the book proper ended, they could make a reasonable guess (e.g. 90% completion would probably be sufficient, even in books that include sample chapters).

Interesting...looks like Kobo plans to release some of this data individually, to the authors.
Someone posted a screenshot on kboards of some of the initial feedback:

It does sound like Kobo is probably undercounting book finishers.
