Sorry, didn't mean to start any flame wars. I'm not much of a text-editor-of-choice flamer, I just use vim* because I stumbled across it first and know (somewhat) how to use it.

I do have an abhorrence of paying for fancy GUIs** when I could just use free stuff to do the same thing though. -- Because I know how to do it of course.
(So obviously, if something has interesting features I want only available in commercial software, I would buy it.)
(Or if it was free/inherited.)

* -- hence the example. I am sure if I had time to learn a second programmers editor, I would find emacs charming as well.

** -- OSX comes to mind. Windows ironically doesn't anymore.

I have WinXP too, it comes in handy as a source for Windows so I can run ADE.

It functions for what I need it for, that is what matters.

But shame on you for not being principled enough to ditch WinXP on moral grounds and help rid the world of its scurrilous presence!

It was an old joke. You can fin pages in internet going about vi and emacs (free editor too, BTW). I went to look at the tool, saw emacs and went away fast (my fingers never were able to handle the old emacs, I suppose now it will be different but I know my way around vi now).

I know the old joke.
I was still afraid of the truth behind it. Best not to take chances.

Shame on you for shaming me, eschwartz! I have not one, but two trusty XP computers; one a now-10+-year-old Lenovo Thinkpad, and a desktop box that just refuses to die, but has a motherboard that precludes updating/upgrading it. My own personal desktop is a Win7 box; my personal laptop is a Win8 new Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga (love it!). I thought I would find the new touch-type interface confusing, but I guess I've spent so many hours sitting at my desktop with a device of whatever kind in my hands, going back and forth between typing and flipping/sliding/tapping that it comes utterly naturally to me.

Vis-à-vis editors: you know, I relayed a story--I think it was here--about a guy on the K forums that went apes**t on me, called me a liar on those for a, for saying we code in html editors. Said only crazy or incompetent people do that, that "everyone" uses an HTML editor like whats-it, um...Dreamweaver, or MSExpressionWeb or one of those GUI/WYSIWYG editors. I've never actually used one of those; not on principle, but just...the first guy that really taught me ePUBs, after I taught myself MOBI (yeah, verily, back in the mobipocket days), used NoteTab Pro...so I used that. Loved it. Then another guy who has moved on used Epsilon. And yes, wowza, that sucker has some juice, so I use that. I understand, from my crew chief that's actually a real-live programmer that it does stuff that's way beyond what I use it for. It is, after all, an eMacs, um...homage, for lack of a better word?

Anyway, I digress: my point is this: the "right" editor is the one you use. It's the one that gets the work done for you. It's what makes your life easy. Ditto OS's, really. {shrug}. So, while I'm perfectly willing to slug out any number of topics, flaming over editors or OS's...not really my thing. :-)

At least now it's been "said", no-one-in-particular doesn't have to chip in and mean it...

Oh, thank GOD. Once again, you've saved me. Don't know how I can repay you, EVAH.

Yeah...maybe I told Texanns002 that story, in email, and I'm mis-remembering. It was bizarro-world. Guy just went ballistic, claiming that anyone who said that they coded in a regular text/html editor was a liar, yadda. He also, in another thread, ranted on and on about Sigil, because it doesn't have word-processor-like features (like...like using Styles, in Word, for example--a multi-select/change feature). In that one, I told him, that's what regex is for, but he seemed to think that I was simply nuts.

{sigh}. I've told Amazon several times now that just because they asked me to contribute to those forums doesn't mean that I have to abide there and take abuse from crazy people. PLUS, hell, it's been what, 5+ years now, since they asked? I think I've MORE THAN fulfilled the request, IMHO.

Oh! AND, I had some nutjob--a guy who constantly posted in weird haiku--start chasing me around "real" Amazon--their retail website--posting replies to my REVIEWS. My KForum user name, and my Amazon username, are not the same, mind you. So, this bozo went out looking for me. He got it into his head that I was a publisher, or that I was posting paid reviews, something like that, and started attacking me all over AMAZON. I mean, creepy much? Thank heavens I talk to ECR, and got that handled, but...really???

(And people wonder why Internet-based business don't have actual OFFICE street address on their websites and invoices.)
