The short answer to the OP's question is because Amazon doesn't allow AZW3 to be emailed.

Perhaps you should read more carefully what people write & also rethink your tone. I was not offensive, I was not contemptuous, I just stated a fact. It is a part of a basic functionality of Calibre, it's is probably fairly easy to fix when compared to all the "unnecessary" and "bonus" functionality (like spell check) which was developed in last year or so.
I'm not even affected with this, as I don't use Amazon Cloud (so I have no need for dual mobi files), so it's not like I am bit**ing and moaning because of poor me can't have what I want. |

Since you don't even need dual mobi metadata editing, you say, maybe you should stop complaining... And stop being contemptuous of features you don't use. |

@eschwartz: I wrote "unnecessary". As in some people could objectively claim that such functionality is farther out of scope of lets say "original role(s)" (library organisation, metadata clean-up, format conversions) Calibre then supporting some "format no one uses anyway" (= dual mobi).
I myself use Calibre's Editor and am glad it exists (was especially happy when Calibre got ToC editor & "embed metadata" button), even if I still prefer Sigil for some thing like IMHO better UI for setting semantics and quicker way of jumping to CSS class via "Go to link or style". If any other functionality I don't use was broken and I was somehow made aware of that fact I would again inform "the right people" that it needs fixing. I'm a busybody ![]() |

Some people could claim that calibre's purpose is to be whatever the author intends it to be, in this case, a one-stop shop for anything ebooks. That includes editing apparently, which isn't really all that different from conversion.
dual-MOBI is not very often used, and it is sufficiently obscure that it might have flaws in calibre's handling of it. Used trumps original scope in my books any day. That being said, I would love for calibre to handle dual-MOBI better, if just on principle. But I don't blame Kovid for not doing so, since he has mentioned it before and said it would require an inconvenient amount of testing to make sure existing, widely-used functionality didn't break, in order to fix something that few use. Me, I'm not much of a one for principles, I prefer plain old practicality and focus on priorities -- I suspect ultimately spellcheck makes more people happy than dual-MOBI handling updated metadata. ![]() |
