An update to this story:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31083737

Quote:
A prisoner's friends or relatives can now order books from Blackwell's, Foyles, Waterstones or WH Smith, who will send the books directly to prisons.

These retailers had to meet "set criteria" to be approved, the National Offender Management Service said. Friends and relatives will only be allowed to send books or hand them in themselves in "exceptional circumstances".

I would hazard a guess that the reason Amazon is excluded is because they aren't purely a bookstore. It would be too easy for someone to use Amazon to send a prisoner something like a file or a bolt-cutter!

I am sure Amazon could be persuaded to check order records for bolt cutters before shipping to prison addresses...

We have that ban here too. Could only send books via approved stores. Though I was able to get a couple of boxes of used books to a prison in my straight after approval from the warden & librarian. The librarian wrote telling me how excited some of the prisoners were to get newer books.

It's a good thing that the family members or friends of the inmates can now send books via retailers. If I'm given the circumstance of being confined to one area, books will be the ones to truly keep me sane (and wiser!).

I have also used Amazon "resellers" with no problem.

... added - of course the packages are opened prior to the prisoners receiving them.
