I would hazard a guess that the reason Amazon is excluded is because they aren't purely a bookstore. It would be too easy for someone to use Amazon to send a prisoner something like a file or a bolt-cutter!

We have that ban here too. Could only send books via approved stores. Though I was able to get a couple of boxes of used books to a prison in my straight after approval from the warden & librarian. The librarian wrote telling me how excited some of the prisoners were to get newer books.

It's a good thing that the family members or friends of the inmates can now send books via retailers. If I'm given the circumstance of being confined to one area, books will be the ones to truly keep me sane (and wiser!).
