@RPribyl - try setting

Preferences->Behaviour->Job Priority to Low
Preferences->Miscellaneous->Max, simultaneous... jobs: to 1 and
uncheck Preferences->Miscellaneous->Limit the max. simultaneous...

When I started using a calibre about 3 years ago, I had performance and stability issues - so I changed those settings as outlined, on the basis that they are the least aggressive.

I've only had calibre crash once since then, and that was related to testing a pre-release of one of the PIs. And I'm not convinced that doing jobs serially is any slower overall than running a few jobs in parallel. And, whilst they're chugging along, I can do other things without thinking my computer has fallen into a vat of molasses.

BR has a good suggestion

When was the last time your computers insides were cleaned?
Conversions are pretty intensive. Clogged fins and vents, weak fans and skimpy PSU's can falter under heavy loads.

FWIW I was going to upgrade my onboard video and discovered I could only use a lower end graphics card. The mid grade recommended a 400W PSU and the specs for my box were 250W (adequate for the basic hardware configuration shipped) . That is what I meant about my skimpy.
